Abia State has emerged as the overall best-performing state in the recently released results of the 2026 National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations, recording an impressive 81.78 per cent pass rate at the credit level.
According to the results released by the National Examinations Council (NECO), Abia State placed first among the 36 states of the federation in overall performance, further reinforcing its growing reputation for academic excellence and improved educational outcomes.
The latest performance also indicates that Abia has maintained a strong position in the national ranking of states in NECO examinations, having consistently featured among the top-performing states since 2024.
In the 2026 ranking, Ebonyi State emerged in second position, while Imo State occupied the eighth position. Anambra State, another South-East state, placed 12th in the national ranking.
At the other end of the table, Akwa Ibom State occupied the second-to-last position among the states.
The latest results have further drawn attention to the performance of the education sector in Abia State under Governor Alex Otti, with the state’s continued strong showing in national examinations pointing to steady progress in educational outcomes.
Abia’s emergence at the top of the 2026 NECO ranking is therefore significant, particularly against the backdrop of the state’s consistent performance in recent years.
The development is likely to renew discussions around the policies, investments and reforms being implemented to strengthen teaching, learning and academic performance across the state.
