A modern 20-bed hospital and maternity facility and a strategic 7-kilometre road linking four Anambra communities are among Senator Uche Ekwunife’s infrastructure interventions in Neni, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Senator Uche Ekwunife facilitated the provision of a modern 20-bed hospital and maternity facility in Neni, as well as the construction of a 7-kilometre road linking Neni, Adazi Enu, Ichida and Awka-Etiti, in interventions aimed at improving healthcare access, transportation and economic activities across the benefiting communities.
The projects address two critical development needs of the people: access to medical services, particularly maternal and child healthcare, and improved road connectivity to ease the movement of residents, traders and goods.
One of the notable interventions is the 20-bed hospital and maternity facility located at St. John’s Catholic Parish, Neni. The facility was established to bring healthcare services closer to residents, improve maternal and child health, and reduce the difficulties associated with travelling outside the community to access medical attention.
The facility is equipped with hospital beds and mattresses, air-conditioned rooms, chairs, computers, cupboards and a 30KVA standby generator to support its operations and provide a more conducive environment for patients and healthcare workers.
The Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor, commissioned the facility and commended Ekwunife for the intervention, describing it as a practical demonstration of the dividends of democracy and effective representation.
The St. John’s Parish Pastoral Council also expressed appreciation for the project and prayed for God’s continued blessings upon the senator for her commitment to improving the lives of the less privileged and other members of society.
Beyond providing the infrastructure, Ekwunife urged the Church and other community stakeholders to take ownership of the facility and ensure its effective management and maintenance to guarantee its long-term benefits to the people.
In the area of road infrastructure, Ekwunife facilitated the construction of the 7-kilometre Neni–Adazi Enu–Ichida–Awka-Etiti road, which is expected to improve connectivity among the four communities and support commercial and social activities.
Before the intervention, the road corridor was reportedly in a dilapidated and hazardous condition, making movement difficult for residents, motorists, traders and other road users.
The road project is expected to ease transportation, improve road safety, facilitate the movement of people and goods, and strengthen economic interactions among communities along the route.
As part of efforts to advance the project, Ekwunife inspected and assessed the road corridor alongside officials of the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, led by the Principal Civil Engineer, Mr. Chukwudi Sibeudu.
The inspection also involved community representatives, including Mr. Wilfred O. Chukwudulue, Administrative Secretary of Umuabani Village, Neni, as stakeholders assessed the route and the infrastructure intervention.
The hospital and maternity facility, alongside the road project, represent interventions in two essential sectors that directly affect the daily lives and economic well-being of residents.
While the healthcare facility is intended to improve access to medical services within Neni, the road project is designed to ease movement between communities, reduce transportation difficulties and support the movement of agricultural produce, merchandise and other goods.
The long-term impact of the projects will depend on effective management of the healthcare facility, proper maintenance of the road and sustained attention to the needs of the benefiting communities.
The interventions also highlight the importance of legislative representation in attracting infrastructure projects that respond to local development priorities, particularly in healthcare delivery, road connectivity and economic development.
