The Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Amaku, Awka, has established an Implant Shop to improve timely access to essential surgical implants and reduce delays in specialised surgical procedures.
The initiative is expected to particularly benefit patients requiring orthopaedic, neurosurgical and other implant-related interventions, by ensuring that critical medical devices needed for surgery are more readily available within the hospital.
The Chief Medical Director of COOUTH, Dr. Maureen Umeakuewulu, explained that surgical implants are medical devices used to support, replace, repair or stabilise damaged or affected parts of the body and are required across several surgical specialties.
According to her, implants are commonly used in the treatment of fractures, joint replacement procedures, neurosurgical conditions and other specialised surgical cases.
She said the establishment of the Implant Shop would make it easier for both patients and medical teams to access the appropriate implants when required, thereby reducing delays associated with sourcing such materials from outside the hospital.
Umeakuewulu noted that timely access to suitable implants is particularly important in emergency cases involving road traffic accidents and other traumatic injuries, where delays in surgical intervention could affect patients’ recovery.
“We are work in progress,” she said.
She stressed that the hospital was continuously working towards ensuring the availability of necessary implant materials suitable for specific surgical procedures.
She added that the initiative would also enhance coordination among the hospital’s various surgical specialties and services, while strengthening its capacity to deliver specialised care.
Beyond immediate patient care, the Implant Shop is expected to reduce the need for patients to travel outside the hospital in search of essential surgical implants and strengthen COOUTH’s capacity as a referral and teaching hospital in Anambra State.
The CMD said proper management, quality control and regular availability of approved implants would be critical to ensuring that the facility contributes to safer, more efficient and patient-centred surgical care.
According her,the initiative also reflects the commitment of the Anambra State Government, under Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo to strengthening the state’s health sector and improving access to quality healthcare.
The CMD said the initiative aligns with the broader aspirations of Anambra Vision 2070, which places emphasis on sustainable development, human capital development and a healthcare system capable of responding effectively to the needs of the people.
The Implant Shop therefore forms part of COOUTH’s broader efforts to expand specialised healthcare delivery, improve access to quality surgical services and strengthen the hospital’s role in providing advanced medical care to patients across Anambra State.
