Mayor Onuchukwu Pledges Immediate Action, Quality Governance for Ekwusigo
Chairman of Ekwusigo Local Government Area, Hon.Ifeanyi Onuchukwu
The Chairman of Ekwusigo Local Government Area, Mr. Ifeanyi Onuchukwu, has pledged to hit the ground running and deliver quality, people-oriented governance to the people of the council area.
Onuchukwu gave the assurance shortly after taking the oath of office as Chairman of Ekwusigo Local Government Area on Saturday, alongside the other 20 elected local government chairmen in Anambra State, at the State Government House, popularly known as the Light House, Awka.
Speaking on his administration’s priorities, Onuchukwu said he was determined to use his tenure to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the people, with emphasis on education, youth and women empowerment, security, primary healthcare and human capital development.
“In the next two years, I am committed to providing quality governance to the people of Ekwusigo. I want to make a mark in the LGA. My priorities will include education, youth empowerment, security and human capital development. We wish to start work immediately,” he said.
The council chairman said his administration would adopt a hands-on approach to governance, stressing that his first task after the swearing-in ceremony would be to inspect some primary healthcare centres across the local government area and assess their conditions.
He said the inspection would enable his administration to identify challenges confronting the facilities and begin the process of addressing them to improve healthcare delivery at the grassroots.
“As I leave here now, I am already prepared to visit some primary healthcare centres, identify their challenges and fund lasting solutions to the issues where necessary,” he said.
Onuchukwu also pledged to give priority attention to youth and women empowerment as part of his administration’s human capital development agenda.
He said investing in the people, particularly young people and women, would be central to his administration’s efforts to expand economic opportunities, strengthen livelihoods and promote inclusive development across Ekwusigo.
The chairman further expressed appreciation to the Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, for his leadership and commitment to grassroots development.
He pledged the support and cooperation of the elected council leadership to the state government’s development agenda, stressing that effective collaboration between the state and local governments was necessary to translate government policies into tangible benefits for residents at the grassroots.
The swearing-in ceremony marked the formal commencement of the tenure of the 21 elected local government chairmen and their deputies in Anambra State.
Governor Soludo administered the oath of office on the newly elected council chairmen and their deputies at the Light House, Awka.
The chairmen were elected on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the August 29 local government election conducted by the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC).
In his address at the ceremony, Governor Soludo charged the new council chairmen to make grassroots development, accountability and the welfare of the people the central focus of their administrations.
The governor congratulated the council chairmen on their electoral victory and reminded them that their responsibility had now shifted from political contest to the business of governance and service delivery.
Soludo urged the new council administrations to work closely with the state government in advancing the objectives of Project Anambra, while emphasising the need for transparency, accountability and prudent management of public resources.
He stressed that government resources must be deployed judiciously and exclusively for the benefit of the people, particularly through projects and programmes capable of improving living conditions and strengthening development at the grassroots.
For Onuchukwu, the immediate focus is therefore on translating the mandate received from the people into visible action, with his administration expected to prioritise basic services, human capital development, healthcare, youth and women empowerment, education and security as it begins its two-year tenure.
