2027: Igbo Disunity Undermining Political Influence– Pan-Igbo Group
The Igbo Community Association in the Federal Capital Territory (ICA FCT) has identified disunity and internal wrangling among Ndigbo as major obstacles to the political advancement and effective representation of the South-East in Nigeria’s governance.
The association has consequently launched plans for an aggressive Igbo unity campaign ahead of the 2027 general elections, aimed at fostering solidarity, strengthening political cooperation and enhancing the collective influence of the Igbo people.
In a statement signed by its President-General, Engr. Sir Ikenna Elis Ezenekwe, and Secretary-General, Mazi Chinwoke Emmanuel Onah, the association stressed the need for greater cohesion among Ndigbo as the country approaches another election cycle.
The statement described the Igbo Community Association, FCT, as the apex socio-cultural organisation representing more than two million Igbo residents in the nation’s capital, and called for unity among Igbo people in the FCT and across the diaspora.
Reflecting on the historical challenges and perceived political marginalisation experienced by Ndigbo since the end of the Nigerian Civil War in 1970, the association said internal divisions had adversely affected the group’s political development and representation in national governance.
It noted that the forthcoming elections presented an opportunity for Ndigbo to overcome longstanding challenges, rebuild their political strength and play a more coordinated role in shaping Nigeria’s future.
“The youths and future generations of Ndigbo cannot allow disunity to continuously erode our collective strength and political influence,”
“A new dawn is upon us, and we must embrace it with courage, purpose and total unity.”the association’s leadership stated.
As part of efforts to achieve this objective, the association announced that its comprehensive Igbo Unity Campaign would officially commence on November 21, 2026.
According to the statement, the campaign would provide an ongoing platform for promoting solidarity, community engagement and strategic alignment among Igbo people in the FCT and across the globe, with the ultimate goal of achieving greater unity.
The association called on Igbo socio-cultural organisations, youth groups, elders and leaders of thought to support the initiative and work collectively towards its success.
It expressed the hope that a united front would strengthen the collective voice of Ndigbo and improve their participation in Nigeria’s political process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
