World Food Day: Imo Farmer Urges Governments to Ramp Up Support for Farmers
A farmer in Umuokpara Ozuh Omuma, Oru East Local Government Area of Imo State, Pastor Nathan Ugochukwu, has urged the federal, state and local governments to increase support for farmers to strengthen food production and ensure food security in Nigeria.
Ugochukwu made the call in an interview with Radio Nigeria to commemorate World Food Day, expressing concern over the country’s food security situation and the need for sustained interventions to address the challenges confronting farmers.
The leader of Great Oru East Farmers Multipurpose Cooperative Society acknowledged that governments had introduced some measures to support agriculture but said more concerted efforts were needed to prevent food insecurity from worsening.
He observed that many farmers were struggling to sustain their farming activities due to increasing challenges, stressing that regular government assistance would help improve productivity and ensure a steady supply of food.
Ugochukwu called for interventions across the agricultural value chain, covering both crop production and livestock farming, to enable farmers to overcome their difficulties and contribute more effectively to national food security.
“I am pleading with the federal, state and local governments to try and periodically assist farmers across the agricultural value chain.
“Whether they are into livestock or crop farming, Nigerian farmers need regular assistance as they face an increasing number of challenges,” he said.
He maintained that consistent support for farmers was essential to boosting agricultural output, sustaining farming livelihoods and enhancing Nigeria’s capacity to feed its growing population.
