COOUTH Boosts Blood Disorder Diagnosis With New Automated Analyser
By Titus Eleweke
Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Amaku, Anambra State, has strengthened its haematology services with the provision of an Automated Haematology Analyser to improve Full Blood Count (FBC) testing and support clinical decision-making.
The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Maureen Uche Umeakuewulu, provided the equipment to the Haematology Department as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen laboratory capacity and improve healthcare delivery.
The analyser enables laboratory scientists to examine blood samples and obtain vital information about red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.
The results provide essential diagnostic information that helps doctors investigate medical conditions such as anaemia and infections, as well as monitor patients’ health.
The acquisition represents another step in the hospital administration’s efforts to improve laboratory services and enhance the capacity of healthcare professionals to deliver effective patient care.
As part of the reforms, following a comprehensive staff audit, the hospital’s laboratory services were decentralised into three specialised departments: Microbiology, Chemical Pathology and Haematology.
The restructuring was designed to establish a more specialised operational structure, allowing each department to focus on its respective area of service.
The provision of the automated analyser further strengthens the operational capacity of the Haematology Department by supporting routine blood analysis, helping laboratory personnel process samples more efficiently and providing relevant information to guide doctors’ clinical decisions.
The development reflects Dr. Umeakuewulu’s commitment to strengthening departmental capacity, improving working conditions for healthcare professionals and enhancing the quality of services available to patients at the teaching hospital.
The initiative also aligns with the healthcare development agenda of the Anambra State Government under Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, whose administration has prioritised improvements in public services, including healthcare delivery across the state.
