Hilton Targets Umuahia for Landmark Five-Star Hotel as Abia Advances Global Investment
Umuahia is on the verge of securing its place on Nigeria’s upscale hospitality map as the Abia State Government moves closer to finalising a partnership with hilton to develop a five-star hotel under the renowned DoubleTree by Hilton brand.
The ambitious project gained momentum on June 18, 2026, when a high-level delegation from Hilton International arrived in Umuahia to inspect the proposed development site, signaling growing confidence in Abia State’s economic prospects and its emergence as a destination for business, tourism and investment.
Speaking on behalf of Governor Alex Otti, Chief of Staff Caleb Ajagba said the decision to pursue a partnership with Hilton reflects the administration’s commitment to delivering world-class infrastructure and services that align with international standards.
According to the state government, increasing investor activity, official engagements and development partnerships across Abia have created a growing demand for premium accommodation.
According to him,the authorities believe that a globally recognised hospitality brand will not only meet that demand but also strengthen the state’s attractiveness to investors, business travellers and tourists.
The proposed hotel comes amid broader efforts to transform Abia’s economy through strategic infrastructure projects, including plans for an airport and seaport, as well as expanding industrial and commercial activities in Aba. Officials say these developments are expected to significantly increase visitor traffic to the state in the coming years.
For Hilton, the project represents another step in its expanding footprint across Nigeria.
Nida Sozugecer, Hilton’s Executive Director for Development in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, described Nigeria as one of the company’s fastest-growing markets and identified Umuahia as a city with strong potential for hospitality growth.
She disclosed that both parties have already signed a Letter of Understanding and are progressing toward a final agreement that would pave the way for the establishment of DoubleTree by Hilton Umuahia.
State officials are optimistic about the economic impact of the project, noting that the hotel could generate substantial employment opportunities, stimulate tourism and provide the capacity needed to host major conferences, business events and international gatherings.
The General Manager of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority, Kingsley Agomuo, revealed that the state has already satisfied approximately 98 percent of Hilton’s requirements, raising expectations that construction could commence once the remaining approvals and agreements are completed.
