First Lady of Anambra Sounds Alarm on School Morals, Blames Society

The wife of the Governor of Anambra State, Mrs. Nonye Soludo, has urged stakeholders in the education sector to devise practical mechanisms for addressing the growing moral degeneration and eroding value systems in schools.
Speaking during a one-day congress for education stakeholders in Anambra State, the Governor’s wife said that the declining level of morality and social values in classrooms calls for immediate and collaborative intervention.

Without such efforts, she warned, society risks losing the fight altogether.
Mrs. Soludo further noted that this battle must largely begin at home, which she said has been significantly affected by societal pressures. As a result, the family unit has lost the bond and sacredness that once held it together.
She noted that the blame for the current moral and social decline lies with everyone , including parents, guardians, religious leaders, and community heads , all of whom, she said, have lost sight of their ultimate responsibilities.
Mrs. Soludo called for a comprehensive reassessment of existing strategies.
She stressed that if this battle is to be won, more practical steps must be taken to tackle the problems at their roots.
She added that while dialogue is an important first step, it is not sufficient on its own. Stakeholders, she insisted, must adopt approaches that are practical, direct, and efficient.
Earlier, the Executive Chairman of the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), Dr. Vera Nwadinobi, who convened the congress under the theme “Moral Regeneration and Value Re-orientation at the Basic Education Level: The Role of Education Stakeholders in Anambra State,” stated that basic education forms the foundation of moral, civic, and intellectual development.
She highlighted that it is during a child’s formative years that character is cultivated and values are internalized.

Dr. Nwadinobi emphasized the critical role of stakeholders in restoring shared values and morals, noting that the congress should serve as a catalyst for action , transforming policies into practice and intentions into meaningful impact on the system.
In his address, the chairman of the event, Chief Clement Nwogbo, stressed the urgency of the situation.
He pointed out that educational values are closely linked to character and ideological reform.
According to him, investments in education would ultimately be wasted if the right values and orientations do not shape the outcomes of this vital sector.
Other speakers and discussants at the event , including university professors Emeka Ezeonu and Chukwuemeka Nwanegbo, the Executive Chairman of the Post Primary Schools Service Commission (PPSSC), Professor Nkechi Ikediugwu, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs. Ify Obinabo, and the former Provost of Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe, Dr. Ego Uzozie affirmed that schools remain a crucial platform for instilling values.
They stressed that teachers, alongside parents, faith-based organizations, communities, and policymakers, must rise to the task with renewed commitment.
