UN Condemns Benue massacres ,Calls for Justice

The United Nations (UN) has strongly condemned the recent attacks on the Yelewata community in Benue State, Nigeria, reportedly carried out over the weekend by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

According to multiple reports, dozens of civilians were killed,while they were sleeping and several others were displaced in the aftermath of the brutal assault.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep concern over the violence and called for swift justice.
In a statement delivered by his Deputy Spokesperson, Farhan Haq, Guterres urged Nigerian authorities to ensure that those responsible for the killings are apprehended and held accountable.

“We are closely monitoring the situation. The Secretary-General condemns the killing of innocent civilians, including those in Nigeria, and he hopes that those responsible for this violence will be found and prosecuted,” Haq said.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also condemned the ongoing violence in Benue State and appealed to all residents and leaders to embrace peace, love, and mutual understanding.
He is scheduled to visit the state on Wednesday as part of renewed efforts to foster reconciliation and address the longstanding conflict affecting the region.

During his visit, President Tinubu is expected to engage with key stakeholders, including traditional rulers, political figures, religious and community leaders, and youth groups, to chart a path toward lasting peace.

The President extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and to all those affected by the crisis. (NAN)
