The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has arrested a local footballer, Ikechukwu Elijah, for the illegal manufacture and distribution of hazardous chemicals and unregistered drugs in the Apo-Waru area of Abuja.

According to a statement issued by NAFDAC’s Deputy Director of Public Relations and Protocol, Adegboyega Osiyemi, Elijah was apprehended while producing and counterfeiting popular brands of chemicals and insecticides within a residential building.

Although he initially denied involvement, Elijah later confessed following a comprehensive search of the premises. His younger brother, who was also present at the scene, was taken into custody.

Items recovered from the site included sealing machines, high-capacity gas cylinders, chemical containers, and large quantities of counterfeit products.

The operation was led by Mr. Embugushiki Godiya of NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate.

In a related development, NAFDAC also sealed an illegal water production facility MZEE Table Water—in the Damangaza area of Abuja. The factory was found to be operating under unhygienic conditions with a falsified license. Additionally, counterfeit rice and packaging materials worth over ₦60 million were seized during the raid.

NAFDAC has urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and avoid purchasing suspicious or unregistered products. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to prosecuting all individuals involved in the production and distribution of counterfeit goods.
