Military Finally Confirms Plot by Officers to Overthrow Tinubu

The Nigerian military has officially confirmed that some of its officers were involved in a plot to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government.
This confirmation follows reports from October last year that several military officers—ranging in rank from Captain to Brigadier-General—were arrested and detained by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) over an alleged coup plot against the administration.
On Monday, Daily Trust reported that the panel constituted to investigate the arrested officers had concluded its work and submitted its findings to the President.
In a statement issued thereafter, the Director of Defence Information, Major-General Samaila Uba, confirmed that the investigative panel had indeed completed its assignment and forwarded its report to the “appropriate superior authority” in line with military regulations.
According to Uba, officers found to have a case to answer would be formally arraigned before an appropriate military judicial panel to face trial in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) wishes to inform the general public that investigations into the matter have been concluded, and the report has been forwarded to the appropriate superior authority in line with extant regulations,” he said.
He explained that the comprehensive investigation, conducted in accordance with established military procedures, examined all circumstances surrounding the conduct of the affected personnel.
“The findings identified a number of officers with allegations of plotting to overthrow the government—conduct that is inconsistent with the ethics, values, and professional standards required of members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria,”
“Accordingly, those with cases to answer will be formally arraigned before the appropriate military judicial panel to face trial in line with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations.” Uba stated.
The senior military officer explained that the decision to make the development public was to promote accountability while upholding the principles of fairness and due process.
He further reaffirmed the commitment of the Armed Forces to professionalism, loyalty, and respect for constitutional authority.
Uba added, “The AFN reiterates that the measures being taken are purely disciplinary and form part of ongoing institutional mechanisms to preserve order, discipline, and operational effectiveness within the ranks.”
