Nonye Soludo Calls for United Action to End Elder Abuse, Protect Senior Citizens

The First Lady of Anambra State, Dr. Mrs. Nonye Soludo, has called on individuals and institutions to stand in renewed solidarity with senior citizens and reaffirm their commitment to protecting their dignity, rights, and overall well-being.
The wife of the Anambra State Governor made this appeal in a message marking the 2026 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
According to Dr. Nonye Soludo, founder of Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo, elderly men and women are custodians of wisdom, culture, and values, whose contributions have helped shape society and guide future generations.
She noted that older persons deserve to age with respect, care, and security, free from neglect, discrimination, exploitation, and all forms of abuse.
She emphasized that safeguarding the welfare of senior citizens is a collective responsibility that requires the active involvement of families, communities, governments, and institutions.
“As families, communities, and institutions, we must create an environment where older people feel valued, heard, respected, and protected.
“World Elder Abuse Awareness Day serves as an important reminder that the way we treat our elders reflects the strength of our humanity and the values we uphold as a society. We must continue to champion kindness, inclusion, compassion, and support for our senior citizens, ensuring that they enjoy the dignity, care, and quality of life they truly deserve.
“Together, let us raise awareness about elder abuse, speak out against all forms of mistreatment, and promote policies and actions that protect the rights and welfare of older persons in our communities,” she added.
