FRSC Unveils NigeriaRAP Committee to Tackle Road Crashes Nationwide

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, on Wednesday inaugurated the Nigeria Road Assessment Programme (NigeriaRAP) Steering Committee, marking a significant step towards enhancing road infrastructure safety and reducing road traffic crashes and fatalities across the country.
According to a statement issued by Osondu Ohaeri, Deputy Corps Commander and Corps Public Education Officer at the FRSC Headquarters, Abuja, the inauguration underscores the Corps’ commitment to strengthening strategic partnerships and promoting evidence-based road infrastructure safety management in Nigeria.
Speaking during the inaugural meeting held at the Corps Marshal’s Conference Hall, FRSC National Headquarters, Abuja, the Corps Marshal described the event as a major milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to build safer roads and achieve global road safety targets.
He noted that road traffic crashes remain a significant public health and developmental challenge worldwide, stressing that proactive road infrastructure assessment is critical to protecting road users and saving lives.
The Nigeria Road Assessment Programme (NigeriaRAP) was established by the Federal Road Safety Corps in partnership with the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) to systematically evaluate road infrastructure safety, identify and eliminate high-risk road sections, and improve protection for all categories of road users, particularly vulnerable groups such as pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.
The programme is anchored on three strategic pillars: strengthening local partnerships, fostering international collaborations, and promoting the attainment of Three-Star Road Safety Ratings and above on Nigerian roads. These pillars are designed to support the development of safer, more resilient, and sustainable transport infrastructure nationwide.
In his presentation, the Corps Marshal recalled that Nigeria’s journey towards institutionalising the programme began with the inauguration of the Stakeholders Committee in February 2021. The initiative gained further momentum with the signing of the National Licence Agreement between FRSC and iRAP on November 18, 2025, which formally launched NigeriaRAP in Nigeria.
He explained that the Steering Committee is expected to provide strategic direction, policy guidance, coordination, and leadership for the effective implementation of the programme and the achievement of its long-term objectives.
Membership of the Steering Committee comprises key stakeholders from both the public and private sectors, including the KRSD Foundation, Federal Ministry of Works, Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Federal Ministry of Transportation, Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI), Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT), Automobile and Touring Club of Nigeria (ATCN), Green Light Initiative, and other strategic partners committed to advancing road safety and sustainable transportation in Nigeria.
The Corps Marshal commended members of the Committee for honouring the invitation and demonstrating their commitment to the initiative. He charged them to remain proactive, innovative, and dedicated in the discharge of their responsibilities to ensure the successful implementation of NigeriaRAP and the attainment of its objectives.
He expressed confidence that through collective action, sustained collaboration, strategic investments, and the adoption of globally recognised road safety standards, the programme would make a significant contribution to reducing road traffic fatalities, improving mobility, and creating a safer road transport environment for all Nigerians.
The inauguration of the Steering Committee represents another important milestone in the Federal Road Safety Corps’ broader strategy to strengthen road safety governance, improve infrastructure standards, and support Nigeria’s commitment to the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety and other international road safety frameworks.
