Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma

Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has charged the media to uphold accountability, professionalism and responsibility in the discharge of its duties, stressing that democracy must be sustained beyond election periods and reflected in the conduct of leaders, institutions and citizens.

Uzodimma gave the charge while delivering a lecture titled “Media, Democratic Consolidation and Development” at the 3rd Raymond Aleogho Dokpesi Annual Diamond Lecture on Communication and Development,in Lagos.

The governor emphasised that democratic principles should not be measured solely by the conduct of elections but must be upheld throughout every tenure of leadership, across all institutions and by every citizen.

He highlighted the critical role of the media in promoting accountability, shaping public discourse and advancing national development, noting that its influence on society comes with a responsibility to uphold the highest standards of professionalism.

According to him, the media must remain firmly grounded in facts and figures while discharging its constitutional and societal responsibilities, particularly in a diverse and dynamic country such as Nigeria.

He stressed that responsible journalism requires a commitment to factual reporting, professionalism and accountability, especially in the media’s role in strengthening democratic institutions and promoting national development.

Uzodimma further noted that the memorial lecture, instituted by the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), goes beyond honouring the memory of his late friend, Raymond Aleogho Dokpesi.

He described the event as an important platform for advancing the values of professionalism, patriotism and accountability that underpin responsible journalism.

The governor’s remarks underscored the need for the media to remain a credible force in democratic consolidation by holding leaders and institutions accountable while contributing constructively to national development.
