Finally PDP Schedules National Convention for August 28–30

Nigeria’s main opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has scheduled its National Convention for August 28 to 30, 2025. The Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri was appointed chairman of the Convention Organising Committee.

The party delayed making a decision on the contentious issue of who will be declared National Secretary until the next meeting of the National Executive Committee, which is scheduled for June 30.

At Tuesday’s meeting, the party’s second-highest organ approved the conduct of the elective National Convention for August 28 to 30 and ratified the composition of committees that will oversee the exercise.

Adamawa Governor Ahmadu Fintiri was appointed chairman of the Convention Organising Committee. Additionally, another committee chaired by Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri was ratified to zone party offices across the six geopolitical zones ahead of the planned National Convention.

However, the meeting was unable to decide on the resolution from the South-East Zonal Executive to adopt Sunday Udeh-Okoye as Acting Secretary to complete the tenure of the office previously held by the zone, following the ouster of Samuel Anyanwu.

What happens within the PDP between now and June 30 may prove crucial, especially as key stakeholders, including FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, were absent from Tuesday’s meeting.

Wike has described the meeting as illegal and has withdrawn from all agreements aimed at resolving the party’s protracted crisis.
