June 12 Is Bigger Than What People Understand – Al-Mustapha
Major Hamza Al-Mustapha
The former Chief Security Officer to the late military Head of State, General Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha has stated that the events leading to the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election are far more complex than the public perceives.
Speaking in an interview with the BBC, Al-Mustapha stated that the widely accepted narrative surrounding the annulled election reflects only a fraction of the truth. He hinted that when the time is right, he will speak more fully on the matter.
“The issue of June 12 is bigger than how people understand it,” “What happened at that time is not something the public really knows. And I am not ready to speak about it now.”he said.
During the interview, he also addressed aspects of his past role in government, the circumstances of General Abacha’s death, and his own political aspirations—remarks that have sparked speculation among Nigerians about the hidden dimensions of a pivotal moment in the country’s democratic history.
When asked about the recent publication of a book by former military president General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, Al-Mustapha disclosed that he had neither been invited to the book launch nor read its contents. He declined to comment, stating, “I won’t say anything for now maybe later.”
