No fewer than 100 patients received free medical screening and treatment during the closing ceremony of the 23rd edition of the Fada Pita Charity Tennis Tournament.

The tournament, which began on May 3, 2025, at the Beverly Hills Recreation Club in Nnewi, officially concluded on July 6, 2025, at the Elite Sports Club, Onitsha, Anambra State, with a Holy Eucharistic celebration to mark the end of the event.

Several special homes for the physically challenged and less privileged were present, including RECDOT Ozubulu, Okija Leprosy Centre, Crowder Children’s Home Onitsha, and DCC Deaf and Dumb Centre Nnewi.

These homes received food items, materials, and cash donations from the organizers.

The Fada Pita Charity Tennis Tournament was initiated in 2002 by Rev. Fr. Peter Muojekwu, a Catholic priest of the Nnewi Diocese.

Initially known as the Fada Pita Tennis Social Organization, it was founded with a charitable vision.

Fr. Muojekwu began gathering like minded individuals, particularly tennis players to join him in celebrating the feast of his patron saints, Peter and Paul, a tradition he cherished since his time in the minor seminary.

Speaking on behalf of the medical team, Rev. Sr. Dr. Onyinye Nwikwu revealed that over one hundred patients were screened and treated for various ailments.

She noted that during the medical outreach, a significant number of individuals were diagnosed with hypertension, diabetes, and visual impairments, many of whom were unaware of their conditions prior to the screening.

“For those with elevated blood sugar levels who have been on medication, we provided appropriate drugs. For newly diagnosed patients, we offered medical advice, supplied available medication, and encouraged them to seek further treatment in hospitals,” Dr. Nwikwu explained.

In his address, the tournament initiator, Rev. Fr. Muojekwu, reiterated that the goal of establishing the initiative was to reach out to as many people as possible. He emphasized the organization’s dedication to promoting youth development programs and supporting the physically challenged and orphaned children who struggle to survive.

According to him, the Fada Pita Charity group comprises three arms:Fada Pita Charity Initiative (based in Nigeria),Fada Pita Charity Organization (United States) and Fada Pita Sports Foundation (United States)

He further explained that while the Charity Organization focuses on assisting the physically challenged and abandoned children, the Sports Foundation is dedicated to promoting youth development through sporting activities.

In an interview with journalists, Fr. Muojekwu described the 23rd edition of the event as a great success.

He stated that prior to the tournament, awareness was raised through radio announcements, workshops, and parish outreach.

He also confirmed that a medical team comprising seven doctors and nurses were deployed to attend to patients.

“Tennis is my favorite sport. “I decided to use it as a tool for evangelism, organizing tennis clubs where people can play, serve God, and use what they love as a path to heaven. Sometimes, we think evangelism is confined to church settings. But we must go where people are and bring them to God.”he stated.

In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the occasion, Chief Emeka Aniebonam, urged members of the organization to remain focused on the original mission of the club.

He expressed concern that the group might be drifting from its founding values and criticized those who failed to participate in the tournament finals.

Also speaking, Chief Sir George Okezie Adinnu, President of the Anambra State chapter of the Fada Pita Charity Tournament, praised the success of the event.

He noted that more sports clubs participated this year than in previous editions, they are:People’s Tennis Club, Onitsha,Onitsha Sports Club,Rojenny Tennis Club,Oraifite Tennis Club,Estate Club, Onitsha.

He emphasized the importance of sports in maintaining physical fitness, stressing that exercise is essential for healthy living.

He urged all club members not to see the tournament as a “do-or-die” affair but to focus on the core mission established by Fr. Muojekwu.
