The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), The Pointer Chapel, has unanimously passed a vote of confidence in the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, and the leadership of the Delta Printing and Publishing Corporation (DPPC), publishers of The Pointer newspaper.
In a communiqué issued following an emergency congress held on July 14, and jointly signed by Chapel Chairman, Comrade Godwin Nzemeka, and Secretary, Comrade Patrick Mgbodo, the union declared its full support for the state’s media leadership, including key officials in the information and communication sectors.
The union specifically commended the Commissioner for Works (Rural and Public Information), Mr. Charles Aniagwu; the Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Mr. Harold Ojji; and the Board of Directors of DPPC, chaired by Pastor Austine Igbine.
Addressing recent allegations circulating on social media that suggest internal crises and unqualified leadership within the DPPC, the union strongly refuted the claims, labeling them as unfounded, malicious, and intended to discredit the Governor’s administration and destabilize the institution.
“The narrative suggesting a breakdown of law and order at The Pointer is entirely false,”
“The work environment remains orderly and professional, with staff diligently performing their duties without disruption.”
That the appointment of the current General Manager, Mrs. Rosemary Nwaebuni, was made in full compliance with constitutional provisions and the Governor’s executive authority. It further warned that any attack on her appointment constitutes a direct affront to the Governor’s legitimate powers” the communiqué stated.
In a robust defense of Mrs. Nwaebuni’s credentials, the union highlighted her distinguished qualifications, including a degree in Mass Communication making her the first in the organization to hold that qualification since the tenure of the late Dr. Elo Ekeli, the pioneer General Manager.
“With over two decades of journalistic experience in both editorial and managerial roles including Title Editor and Political Editor Mrs. Nwaebuni was described as a seasoned media professional with both national and international exposure” it stated
The NUJ condemned the ongoing campaign of defamation allegedly orchestrated by certain individuals it described as lacking the ethical and professional credibility to question the management.
It called for a formal investigation into the actions of these individuals, noting a history of absenteeism and dereliction of duty among some of the accusers.
The communiqué concluded by reaffirming the union’s unwavering support for the leadership of the DPPC and commended the administration’s efforts in maintaining institutional stability, promoting professionalism, and fostering innovation at The Pointer.
“The NUJ, The Pointer Chapel, expresses its full confidence in Governor Sheriff Oborevwori; Mr. Charles Aniagwu; Mr. Harold Ojji; Pastor Austine Igbine and members of the DPPC Board; GM Mrs. Rosemary Nwaebuni; and the immediate past board chairman, Olorogun (Dr.) Ebenezer Okorodudu, for their invaluable contributions to the growth and sustainability of the state-owned media organization.”
Finally, the union urged the public and professional bodies to disregard the negative and misleading reports, describing them as baseless and lacking credibility.
“The NUJ, Pointer Chapel, remains resolutely committed to truth, integrity, and the defense of professional journalistic standards,” the statement stated.
