Anambra Born Corps Member Transforms Bayelsa School After Seeing Kids Learn in Flooded, Roofless Classrooms

A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member deployed to Bayelsa State, Brown-Ofoeme Ebubechukwu Prosper (BY/24B/2451), has renovated four dilapidated classroom blocks at Community Primary School, Swali, located in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

Brown-Ofoeme, a native of Nnewi North Local Government Area in Anambra State, took on the project to help restore dignity to public education in the community.

Deeply moved by the deplorable learning conditions he witnessed, he embarked on the renovation to ensure that schoolchildren could learn in a safe and conducive environment.

According to the corps member, the initiative executed as part of his personal Community Development Service (CDS) project was inspired by a distressing experience during a visit to the school. He was shocked to find children studying in open, roofless classrooms, exposed to the elements, their books soaked from the rain as they tried to shield themselves from flooding and harsh weather.

“I was heartbroken. The ceilings were missing, windows shattered, doors broken, and children sat helplessly in flooded classrooms. I went home that day and prayed to God for the strength and resources to make a change. By His grace, that prayer was answered.”Brown-Ofoeme recalled.
Initially deployed to the Nigeria Police Force in Bayelsa State Command, Brown-Ofoeme had originally planned an anti-cultism campaign for his CDS project. However, after witnessing the dire conditions faced by the schoolchildren, he shifted focus and committed himself fully to rehabilitating the school’s facilities.
Determined to make a difference, he consulted with the school’s management and began mobilizing support from well-meaning individuals and donors. With their help, the vision soon began to take shape.
“The transformation is nothing short of remarkable
“The once-abandoned classrooms now have new roofs, PVC ceilings, nine new doors, and twenty-four windows. The entire structure, including the administrative block, has been repainted, giving the school a fresh, vibrant look. What was once a deteriorating and neglected space has become a beacon of hope for the community.
Today, children who once sat in flooded, broken classrooms now study in comfort and safety. The renovation has not only improved the physical environment but also uplifted the spirits of both pupils and teachers”he said.
The management and pupils of Community Primary School, Swali, expressed profound gratitude to Brown-Ofoeme.
They described his intervention as life-changing and praised him for the compassion, commitment, and sacrifice he demonstrated throughout the project. Many offered heartfelt prayers, asking God to bless and reward him for the indelible impact he has made on their lives.
