Operatives of the Special Anti-Touting Squad Agency (SASA) in Anambra State have arrested six suspects for allegedly engaging in illegal revenue collection from traders and commercial motor operators.
The agency has also arraigned the suspects in court, where they were granted bail in sums ranging from ₦200,000 to ₦300,000, with a Level 17 civil servant required as surety.
This intensified crackdown on illegal revenue collectors follows the agency’s reaffirmed commitment to restoring order and protecting traders from extortion across the state.
During a decisive enforcement operation carried out in Onitsha and its surrounding areas, SASA operatives apprehended six individuals accused of unlawfully collecting levies from traders and commercial operators.
The suspects have been identified as Monday Chukwuka, Sunday Chinweze, Uche Nweke, Ekene Onyedimma, Anakwe Uchenna, and Ugochukwu Ukadike.
They were arrested following credible intelligence gathering and coordinated field surveillance conducted over a period of time.
According to the SASA Media Aide, Ambassador Karen James, preliminary investigations indicated that the suspects allegedly operated without authorization, imposing illegal charges on unsuspecting members of the public for personal gain.
She stated that state authorities have emphasized that such activities not only undermine lawful revenue collection systems but also impose undue hardship on small-scale business owners striving to survive in a challenging economic environment.
Following their arrest, the suspects were arraigned before a Magistrate Court in Onitsha North Local Government Area.
The court ordered their remand in a correctional facility while granting bail under specified conditions, including a ₦200,000 bond, a ₦300,000 , and the provision of a Level 17 civil servant as surety.
The case has been adjourned to July 1, 2026, for further hearing.
Karen James further stated that SASA has reiterated its zero-tolerance stance against illegal levies and economic sabotage, warning that the agency will continue to pursue offenders relentlessly. Residents and traders have been urged to report any form of harassment or illegal collection to the appropriate authorities.
According to Karen, the latest operation sends a strong message that Anambra State is taking firm steps to sanitize its business environment and ensure that only authorized structures regulate revenue collection.
She added that illegal gains may offer quick rewards but ultimately lead to disgrace and legal consequences. According to her, a society thrives when individuals choose integrity over exploitation and support lawful systems that protect everyone.
