APGA Dismisses Social Media Results of Anambra NASS, Assembly Primaries
The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Anambra State has dismissed results of last Saturday’s National Assembly and State House of Assembly primaries circulating on social media, describing them as false, misleading, and unauthorized.
The party maintained that the only body empowered to authenticate, uphold, or invalidate results arising from the primaries is the Appeal Committee constituted by the party leadership.
APGA stated that the committee is currently reviewing petitions and complaints emanating from the conduct of the three primary elections held across the state, stressing that no result published on social media should be regarded as official.
Since the conclusion of the primaries on Saturday, the Appeal Committee has reportedly been inundated with petitions from aggrieved aspirants and stakeholders challenging aspects of the exercises and the purported outcomes announced in various quarters.
In a statement issued on Monday, the National Publicity Secretary of APGA, Mazi Ejimofor Opara, said all results currently in circulation originated from unofficial social media sources and therefore lack legitimacy.
Opara emphasized that only the Chairman of the Electoral Panel has the authority to confirm, cancel, or uphold the outcome of any of the three primary elections.
“Every election has two sides. When the umpire tosses the coin, it can fall either way,”
“The outcome is a matter of probability, and only strategic, rule-based decisions produce results that can stand the test of legitimacy.”
“From a distance, it is easy to mistake heads for tails. When that happens, only the umpire with the closest and clearest view can determine with certainty what the coin shows. The same principle applies to our primaries,” Opara stated.
Referencing Article 21 of the party’s guidelines for the 2026 Anambra National Assembly and State House of Assembly primaries, Opara said the provisions were explicit on how discrepancies in election results should be handled.
“Article 21 of APGA’s Procedures for the Anambra National Assembly and State House of Assembly Primary Election 2026, which was duly distributed to all aspirants, is very clear,”
“Where there are discrepancies in the ward results collated and declared by the Returning Officer and those of the Electoral Panel, the Chairman of the Electoral Panel is empowered to cancel the result and rely on verified ward results in determining the actual winner of the election.”he said.
He explained that the provision confers legal and procedural authority on the Electoral Panel Chairman to resolve disputes where credible and verifiable evidence contradicts announced figures.
According to Opara, APGA also possesses additional internal conflict-resolution mechanisms capable of addressing disputes, stalemates, and inconclusive outcomes arising from the primary elections.
“Beyond that, the party has other internal mechanisms to address stalemates or inconclusive primaries,”
“At the end of the day, only the party can authenticate the credibility and legitimacy of any primary election result.”he said.
He accused some aspirants of deliberately fueling tension by circulating unverified claims online.
“Aspirants who flood social media with unverified results are merely stoking confusion and political mischief,”
“APGA will not validate outcomes based on online publications or propaganda, regardless of how highly placed the individuals involved may be.” he said.
He advised aggrieved aspirants and their supporters to channel their grievances through the party’s established internal dispute-resolution structures instead of resorting to media warfare.
“It is in the best interest of all aspirants and their supporters to utilize the party’s internal mechanisms in addressing any perceived infractions,” .
“That is the only credible pathway to fair dispute resolution and the protection of the party’s integrity, unity, and democratic culture.” Opera said.
Reaffirming the party’s commitment to cohesion ahead of the 2026 elections, Opara added:“APGA remains one united political family. We win together, and we will continue to win together.”
