Improved Road Network in Okpoko Boosts Security Operations — Udogachi Commander
By Polycarp Ifeanyi
The Commander of Operation Udogachi in Ogbaru I Constituency, Okpoko Community, Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State, Mr. Victor Okpara, has attributed the prevailing peace and improved security situation in the community to enhanced road infrastructure and stronger collaboration among security agencies.
Speaking with journalists in Okpoko, Okpara said the extensive road construction undertaken by the Anambra State Government under Governor Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo has significantly improved the effectiveness of security operations across the community.
According to him, the improved road network has enhanced the mobility of security personnel, reduced response time to emergencies, and limited the operational advantage previously enjoyed by criminal elements.
“The upgraded road network has enhanced our mobility and reduced response time to incidents across the community. Criminal activities have reduced significantly in Okpoko. Security operatives in the area are performing effectively, and the improved roads have made our work easier,” he said.
He noted that poor road conditions in the past often hindered patrol operations and delayed security responses.
“Previously, bad roads slowed down patrols and gave criminals an advantage. With the new roads, our teams can now access virtually every part of Okpoko quickly, especially during night operations,” he added.
Recounting his experience in community security management, Okpara, popularly known as Ezinwanne, said he began his service as a local security commander in Okpoko before being elevated to the position of General Commander by Chief Innocent Ogbuefi in recognition of his dedication, performance, and leadership qualities.
“When I became General Commander, Okpoko was under siege from criminal gangs who moved from house to house kidnapping residents. By the grace of God, my men and I confronted those challenges and restored order. We arrested dozens of hoodlums and handed them over to the Police for prosecution,” he stated.
Okpara disclosed that he has served as General Commander for 13 years.
He recalled a period when members of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) allegedly posed security challenges in the area, noting that the situation was brought under control with the support of Chief Chinenye Ihenko, popularly known as Okpompi, as well as the Anambra State Government.
Reflecting on the sacrifices made in the course of securing the community, he said he lost his twin brother and four members of his security team while carrying out their duties.
“I paid a huge personal price in the course of securing this community. I lost my twin brother and four of my men. Today, Okpoko is peaceful. People are building houses, investing in businesses, and moving about freely. Unfortunately, many of the achievements recorded over the years have not been adequately acknowledged, while others often take credit for our efforts,” he said.
Okpara also recalled facing criticism despite his contributions to security operations in the area.
“Even when I arrested four suspected kidnappers and handed them over to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), some people still accused me of wrongdoing. However, when I informed the government and SARS that I was responsible for the arrests, I was vindicated,” he stated.
Commenting on his relationship with the Chairman of Ogbaru Local Government Area, Hon. Sir Kenneth Akwuobi, Okpara described the council boss as a strong supporter of security initiatives in Okpoko.
According to him, Akwuobi played a key role in recommending him to the state government when the Agunechemba security outfit was inaugurated, a development that eventually led to his appointment as Commander for Ogbaru I Constituency.
He also commended Governor Soludo for providing operational vehicles and logistical support to security personnel, describing the intervention as a major boost to crime-fighting efforts in the area.
“Okpoko is peaceful today, and we are doing everything possible to sustain the gains recorded so far. We arrest hoodlums and individuals who violate government laws and regulations and hand them over to the Police. We remain committed to reducing crime and maintaining law and order in the community. Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) who have served in Okpoko can attest to our efforts,” Okpara noted.
While expressing satisfaction with the security situation, the commander warned that the lingering leadership dispute within the community could undermine the progress achieved if not properly addressed.
“The only major challenge we are facing today is the leadership tussle within the community. We appeal to the government and relevant stakeholders to ensure that the situation does not escalate or create an opportunity for criminal elements to regain a foothold in Okpoko,” he appealed.
He further expressed appreciation to Hon. Kenneth Akwuobi, community leaders, the member representing the constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, and local informants for their support and cooperation.
Assuring residents of his continued commitment to peace and security, Okpara said:
“I want to assure the people of Okpoko that we will continue to work tirelessly to preserve peace and security. Okpoko must remain calm, safe, and conducive for residents and investors alike.”
