Anambra Police Smash Drug Den, Rescue Pregnant 15-Year-Old Girl
The Anambra State Police Command has rescued a 15-year-old pregnant girl in Achalla Community, Awka North Local Government Area of the state.
The Command also uncovered a suspected drug den operating around St. Paul’s Secondary School, Achalla, where some youths were allegedly involved in the abuse of methamphetamine, popularly known as Mkpuru Mmiri.
The development was disclosed on Friday by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.
According to him, “During the raid, the team rescued a 15-year-old girl who is pregnant and arrested a suspect in connection with alleged child exploitation and related offences.”
Ikenga stated that the victim was immediately taken into protective custody and provided with the necessary care and support.
He further disclosed that preliminary investigations revealed that the minor may have been subjected to abuse and exploitation by several individuals at different times in various communities. He added that investigators are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case and identify all persons who may have been involved.
According to the police spokesperson, further investigations suggest that the victim’s vulnerable condition may have been exploited by some individuals for personal gain.
“Meanwhile, the victim was taken to the Police Hospital, Awka, where medical examinations and other necessary procedures have commenced,” he said.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has directed that the matter be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough and comprehensive investigation.
The investigation will also examine all relevant circumstances surrounding the case and facilitate the prosecution of anyone found culpable.
The Command condemned all forms of child abuse, exploitation, and violence against minors, reiterating its commitment to protecting vulnerable persons, safeguarding children’s rights, and ensuring that justice is served in accordance with the law.
The police also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report cases of child abuse, exploitation, drug-related activities, and other criminal acts to the appropriate authorities.
