Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State is set for a major milestone in its development journey as Governor Charles Soludo prepares to commission several landmark projects executed by the Mayor of the council, Hon. James Chimezie Obi.
Comprising Ozubulu, Orifite, Ihembosi, and Ichi communities, Ekwusigo LGA had, for many years, experienced significant infrastructural deficits and limited human capital development. However, residents say the narrative began to change following the emergence of Hon. Chimezie Obi as the council leader under the Soludo administration.
Hon. Obi initially served as the Transition Committee Chairman before being elected as the substantive Mayor, a position he has held for two consecutive terms. During this period, he has been widely commended for his prudent management of council resources and his commitment to transforming critical sectors of the local government. His leadership style, many observers note, reflects the timeless principle that “a good name is better than gold.”
Beyond the execution of infrastructure and human capital development projects, Ekwusigo Local Government, under the leadership of Mayor Chimezie Obi, is increasingly being recognized as one of the safest local government areas in Anambra State, owing to strategic investments in security and surveillance infrastructure.
As part of Governor Soludo’s commissioning tour, the following completed projects will be unveiled:
A 3-kilometre road with solar-powered streetlights linking Ekwusigo to neighbouring communities.
A renovated and fully furnished Legislative Building at the Local Government Secretariat.
A reconstructed Ekwusigo Community Town Hall.
A rebuilt classroom block, formerly used as an Introductory Technology Laboratory and WAEC Examination Hall, at Community Secondary School, Ihembosi.
Installation of CCTV surveillance cameras across strategic locations within Ekwusigo LGA.
A 30KVA mini-grid power system providing electricity to the entire Local Government Secretariat.
A newly constructed Traditional Rulers’ Building.
Functional boreholes installed within the Local Government Secretariat to ensure a reliable water supply.
A modern ICT and Surveillance Control Room.
Newly constructed modern toilet facilities at the Local Government Secretariat, among several other projects.
Residents React
Following an inspection tour of the projects by journalists, several residents and stakeholders expressed satisfaction with the level of development witnessed across the local government area.
Speaking during the visit, Nze Pius Afulukwe described the newly constructed Ihembosi–Ozubulu road as a game-changer, noting that it has significantly improved transportation and boosted economic activities in the area.
A retail trader, Mrs. Chioma Udemba, praised Mayor Obi for his performance and dedication to community development, praying for God’s continued blessings upon him.
Also speaking, Mr. Ekene Anene of Ihembosi Community recalled that the road linking Ihembosi and Ozubulu was previously in a deplorable condition and often described by residents as a “death trap.” He commended the Mayor for reconstructing the road and delivering what he described as one of the most impactful projects in the area.
Similarly, Mr. Ebere Nebe, a commercial motorcycle operator, and Engr. Benjamin Chukwugozie, a roadside motorcycle mechanic from Ozubulu and Ihembosi respectively, attested to the positive impact of the road project on their daily activities.
According to them, the newly reconstructed road has reduced the frequency of vehicle and motorcycle breakdowns, thereby lowering maintenance costs and improving mobility for residents and commuters alike.
The residents unanimously expressed appreciation for the developmental strides recorded under Mayor Chimezie Obi’s administration, describing the projects as evidence of purposeful leadership and effective grassroots governance.
