Abia Green Shuttle Gets Major Boost as Otti Commissions 20 Electric Buses

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, on Friday commissioned 20 new electric buses for the Abia Green Shuttle service in Umuahia, the state capital, as part of efforts to expand the state’s clean, efficient, and inclusive public transportation system.
The buses were formally inaugurated at the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal, fulfilling the administration’s commitment made during the launch of the first batch of 20 electric buses on December 23, 2025.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Governor Otti described transportation as a critical driver of economic growth, emphasizing that an efficient transport system enhances mobility, stimulates economic activities, creates opportunities, and improves the overall quality of life for residents.
He said the introduction of additional electric buses reflects the government’s commitment to building a modern, environmentally sustainable transport network.
According to him, the adoption of electric-powered buses will reduce operational costs, lower carbon emissions, and support the administration’s vision of a cleaner, greener, and more inclusive Abia State.
The Governor further disclosed that the newly acquired buses are equipped with expanded cargo capacity and accessibility features for persons with disabilities, ensuring greater comfort, convenience, dignity, and equal access for all commuters.
As part of broader efforts to improve road safety and traffic management, Otti announced stricter enforcement of traffic regulations across the state.
He declared zero tolerance for reckless driving, traffic light violations, and vehicle overloading, warning that offenders would face the full weight of the law.
He also revealed that the Abia State Road Traffic and Safety Management Agency (ARTSMA), in collaboration with the Harmonised Task Force, will extend its daily operations until 10:00 p.m., including weekends, to strengthen traffic enforcement, improve road safety, and safeguard lives and property.
Governor Otti commended the Interagency Transport Team, led by Mr. Chinenye Mba Uzoukwu, for its dedication to implementing the state’s transportation reforms.
He assured that the proper management of government transport assets, operational efficiency, and staff welfare would remain key priorities of his administration.
The Governor warned against the sabotage and vandalism of government-owned transport infrastructure and assets, stressing that anyone found culpable would be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
He also urged residents to fulfil their civic responsibility by paying taxes promptly, noting that improved internally generated revenue would enable the government to sustain investments in critical infrastructure, transportation, and other essential public services.
Governor Otti stated that the expansion of the Abia Green Shuttle fleet represents another significant milestone in the administration’s efforts to bridge the gap between the state’s current realities and its vision of a modern, efficient, environmentally responsible, and people-centred Abia.
