Fuel Scarcity Looms as Tanker Drivers Halt Loading at Dangote Refinery

Tankers loading fuel

Fuel scarcity may be imminent as members of the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) have suspended the programming of tankers for loading petroleum products at Dangote Refinery.

This action is in protest against the enforcement of a new E-call up system along the Lekki Port corridor, implemented by the Lagos State Government in partnership with Call-Up Technologies Limited.

In a memo dated June 14, 2025, and signed by NARTO President, Yusuf Lawal Othman, the association rejected the N12,500 fee per truck imposed under the new system.

Instead, NARTO proposed a reduced charge of N2,500, which it believes better reflects current economic realities. Despite multiple discussions, no agreement has been reached.

Effective June 16, NARTO instructed its members to suspend tanker scheduling along the Lekki-Epe corridor until a resolution is achieved. The association warned that if the issue is not addressed within 24 to 48 hours, it could trigger a nationwide fuel shortage.

Othman said that NARTO supports the E-call up system in principle and is not opposed to orderliness, but insists the fee must be reasonable. He also noted that the association remains open to negotiating a compromise with the Lagos State Government.

“We’re engaging constructively and following due process to avoid a full halt in operations,” Othman told Vanguard.
