Anambra State – The Young Progressive Party (YPP) Governorship candidate in the upcoming Anambra State election scheduled for November 8, 2025, Sir Paul Chukwuma, has called for collective action through increased awareness to combat sickle cell anemia.
He made this call in Agulu Anaocha local government area of Anambra State on Thursday as the United Nations and the world commemorated the 2025 World Sickle Cell Day.
Represented by the YPP Deputy Governorship candidate, Uzu Okagbue, during a visit to the Sickle Cell Orphanage and Underprivileged Home in Agulu, Sir Paul emphasized the need for joint efforts to consign sickle cell anemia to the “dustbin of history.”
“To eliminate sickle cell, we must collectively stamp out the ignorance that allows parents to have children without first knowing their genotypes,” Sir Paul stated.
He urged governments, communities, churches, and individuals to commit to eradicating the disease.
Reflecting on his personal experience with the disorder, Sir Paul disclosed about his brother, Hyginus Chidalu Chukwuma, who suffered sickle cell anemia.
“I’m constantly reminded of my brother, Hyginus, who suffered from sickle cell. Many of us have a loved one who has experienced this condition. That’s why we must stop accepting it as an inevitable verdict of nature,” he said.
However, the YPP gubernatorial hopeful emphasized that sickle cell anemia is not a death sentence. He encouraged those living with the condition to embrace life fully and view it as just one of many challenges.
“Everyone has their share of life’s challenges. This is one of them. But we can end it and we will,” Chukwuma asserted.
In her remarks, the Director of the Sickle Cell Orphanage and Underprivileged Home, Agulu, Aisha Edward Maduagwu, praised Governor Charles Soludo and his wife, Nonye, for their ongoing support. She also expressed gratitude to Sir Paul Chukwuma for his “consistent generosity,” including his donation of an ambulance to the home.
She acknowledged former Anambra State Governor Mr. Peter Obi for commissioning the ambulance, represented at the event by Valentine Obienyem.
Speaking at the event, YPP Deputy Governorship candidate Uzu Okagbue affirmed that “Sir Paul Chukwuma is and has continued to be selfless.” Sharing his personal connection to the cause.
He challenged stakeholders to go beyond philanthropy and to follow Sir Paul’s example in serving both God and humanity.
“We must do more than give. We must ensure these children live full lives. We will walk this journey with them. I am convinced beyond doubt that we can end this disease,” Okagbue declared, assuring continued support from Sir Paul Chukwuma.
The event was well attended. In addition to Sir Paul Chukwuma (represented by Uzu Okagbue), other dignitaries included Chief Jude Osude, Hon. Ralph Okeke, and Chief Mike Ejezie. Former Governor Peter Obi was represented by Valentine Obienyem, while Valentine Ozigbo was also present to commemorate World Sickle Cell Day 2025.
