The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has officially scheduled the primary election for the Anambra South Senatorial District to hold on July 21st, 2025.
It is recalled that Governor Charles Soludo had earlier directed the six aspirants vying for the senatorial ticket to convene a conclave with the aim of selecting a consensus candidate.
During a recent stakeholders’ meeting in Ekwulobia, Governor Soludo advised the aspirants either to agree on a candidate among themselves or permit him to select a consensus candidate on their behalf to ensure party unity ahead of the bye-election.
However, reports indicate that the aspirants have yet to reach an agreement on any consensus candidate, prolonging the political negotiation process.
Meanwhile, intense lobbying and horse-trading have been reported among statutory delegates ahead of the primary election.
There is also mounting pressure on the party leadership to approve the nomination of preferred adhoc delegates who will participate in the election, a move that could influence the eventual outcome.
While the party continues to await the nomination of a consensus candidate, APGA has announced a provisional timetable for the conduct of primary elections for various National and State Assembly seats. These include the two Senatorial Districts, five Federal House of Representatives constituencies, and nine State Assembly constituencies among them Onitsha North I, whose sitting lawmaker was tragically kidnapped and killed after a ransom was collected.
According to a statement by APGA’s National Publicity Secretary, Mazi Ejimofor Opara:
“Pursuant to the powers vested in the National Working Committee under the APGA Constitution (2019) and in compliance with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) timetable for the upcoming bye-elections scheduled for August 16, 2025, the party has approved the following provisional schedule for the primaries:
Sale and Return of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms: July 3rd to July 9th, 2025S
Screening of Prospective Senatorial, House of Representatives, and State Assembly Aspirants: July 12th, 2025,
Resolution of Appeals Arising from Screening: July 15th, 2025,
Ward Congresses for the Election of Adhoc Delegates: July 15th, 2025S and Senatorial, House of Representatives, and State Assembly Primary Elections: July 21st, 2025”
Speaking further on the upcoming primaries, Mazi Opara reiterated APGA’s commitment to conducting free, fair, and transparent elections.
He urged all aspirants to place their confidence in the party’s electoral process, emphasizing that the primaries would be conducted in a manner that upholds the party’s democratic principles and unity.
