The Anambra State Anti-Touting Agency, in collaboration with the Anambra State Board of Internal Revenue (AIRS), has arrested and secured the conviction of individuals involved in illegal revenue collection in the State.
The arrests followed intensified joint enforcement operations targeting the illegal collection of levies and related criminal activities. Several suspects have been prosecuted as part of a wider crackdown across the state.
In a series of well-coordinated raids on known black spots in the state ,operatives apprehended individuals actively engaged in unauthorized revenue collection.
The ongoing enforcement drive underscores the government’s continued efforts to combat activities that threaten public order and economic stability in Anambra.
Among those arrested are Abuchi Okechukwu, apprehended at Unizik Junction for unlawfully extorting motorists,an act in direct violation of established state revenue laws.
Monday Nwaoka, a native of Izzi in Ebonyi State, was caught at Regina Junction, allegedly collecting levies from tricycle operators under false pretenses.
In a related incident, Chukwubike Ezenwudo, from Amaesi in the Ekwulobia Local Government Area, was found in possession of Indian hemp, further highlighting the region’s ongoing struggle with drug abuse and trafficking.
The suspects were handed over to the Anambra State Internal Revenue Service for further investigation. Following prosecution, they were convicted and sentenced to six months in prison for their offenses.
The swift and strategic actions of the agency have been met with public commendation.
Residents and business owners in the affected areas expressed relief at the removal of disruptive elements that have long hindered lawful trade and threatened community peace.
In a statement following the convictions, the Anambra State Government reiterated its firm commitment to law enforcement and the eradication of touting, drug-related crimes, and unauthorized revenue collection.
The government also called on the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to relevant authorities.
“These operations send a clear message that illegal practices will no longer be tolerated in Anambra State,” said a spokesperson for the Internal Revenue Service. “We urge citizens to support these efforts by staying alert and cooperating with law enforcement agencies.” it stated.
The agency confirmed that more enforcement operations are planned in the coming weeks, aligning with the administration’s broader goal of sanitizing the revenue system and restoring public confidence in government institutions.
