The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Anambra State chapter, has cautioned Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), over his comments regarding the burial of Anambra-based fish farmer,Martins Onyekesi, who was murdered by gunmen in July 2025.
Onyekesi, the Chief Executive Officer of a fish business known as Fish Magnet, was shot and abducted from his Ezinifite-Okpuno residence. Despite the alleged payment of a ₦10 million ransom by his family, he died shortly after his release.
VDM is scheduled to attend a candlelight procession in honor of the deceased businessman, slated for Tuesday.
In a video recently obtained by our correspondent in Awka, VDM was seen telling his followers how he should be buried in the event he is killed in Anambra State.
In an exclusive interview on Monday, the Anambra State President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Mazi Chukwuma Okpalaezeukwu, expressed dismay over the celebrity’s comments, saying that the state is not as dangerous as it is being portrayed.
While condemning the murder of the young Fish farmer/entrepreneur, Okpalaezeukwu welcomed all individuals attending the candlelight procession, urging them to remain peaceful and refrain from actions or statements that could inflame tensions.
“It is a very sad and tragic situation—the unprovoked and brutal killing of a hardworking young man who represented hope not only for his family but for the people of Anambra and Nigerians at large, especially in the area of food security,” “He is one of many victims of the hydra-headed monster of insecurity that has befallen our society.”he said.
Okpalaezeukwu acknowledged that Anambra, like many other regions, is grappling with the broader national insecurity, but said that both the state government and security agencies are working relentlessly to address the challenges.
The Ohanaeze leader also expressed concern over VDM’s video, describing the comments as “misguided” and calling for their immediate retraction.
“While Anambra is indeed facing some peculiar security challenges, we cannot allow anyone to demarket our state through insinuations and tasteless remarks about death and sit-at-home orders,”
“We live here. This is not VDM’s first visit to Anambra State. It is unpatriotic and politically motivated to incite fear among our people and to ridicule the South East with such insensitive rhetoric. This is an election year, tensions are already high, and we cannot stand by and watch politicians use VDM to destabilize or provoke unrest in our state.”he stated.
He further condemned any form of unauthorized public march under the guise of a candlelight procession, citing security concerns and the need to preserve public order.
“To ensure public safety and maintain the relative stability we have, any candlelight procession should take place in an enclosed and secured environment. That way, we can honor the deceased meaningfully and peacefully,” he said.
Okpalaezeukwu called on the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, and relevant security agencies to take proactive steps, including the designation of a suitable venue, such as Ekwueme Square for the procession and the provision of adequate security for attendees.
He also reminded residents that security is a collective responsibility and urged everyone to avoid politicizing issues of life and safety.
