A United States-based medical support organization, the Dr. Odiraa Nwankwor Support Group, has enrolled 145 indigenes of the Nanka community in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State into the Anambra State Health Insurance Scheme (ASHIA).

Our reporter gathered that the initiative was carried out through the adoption model, which allows individuals or groups to pay the annual health insurance premiums on behalf of others. This model provides beneficiaries with access to affordable, quality healthcare and aligns with Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s vision to expand health insurance coverage across all 179 communities in the state.

The enrollment ceremony took place on Friday at Chief Patrick Nwankwor’s compound in Umuduni-Agbiligba. Speaking at the event, the group’s founder, Dr. Odiraa Nwankwor, emphasized the need for accessible and affordable healthcare in the Nanka community.

He underscored the role of regular medical checkups and timely intervention in preventing or detecting diseases early.

“Our people now have no excuse not to access quality healthcare at hospitals,” “I want to eradicate the culture of self-medication. If you are unwell, go to the hospital for professional treatment. This initiative is part of our proactive steps to ensure our people receive the care they deserve.”Dr. Nwankwor said.

He also called on affluent individuals and groups to support the state government’s efforts to develop the healthcare sector.

“We’re doing this to encourage others to key into the developmental agenda of Governor Soludo’s administration,” he added.

The Managing Director of ASHIA, Dr. Simeon Onyemaechi, educated the beneficiaries on the benefits of the scheme, explaining that it significantly reduces the financial burden of hospital bills while ensuring access to quality medical care.

“Health insurance is a cost-effective way to access professional healthcare,” “I encourage all enrollees to visit their designated hospitals promptly and avoid delays in seeking treatment.”Onyemaechi stated.

Also speaking at the event, the President-General of the community, Rev. Canon John Ifeanyichukwu, praised Dr. Nwankwor, whom he described as an industrious son of the soil, for his commitment to improving the lives of the less privileged.

“This gesture reflects Dr. Nwankwor’s dedication to his people,” “He wants the indigent and vulnerable to enjoy quality healthcare without financial strain. I urge beneficiaries to safeguard their ID cards and use them appropriately to access services.”he said.

Several newly enrolled members, including Mr. Sunday Okeke and Mrs. Christiana Ezenwo, expressed deep appreciation for the initiative, calling it life-changing.

They specifically thanked Dr. Nwankwor for his generosity and foresight in prioritizing healthcare in their community.

“These free healthcare services are a blessing to many families, including ours,”

“The high cost of medical care has been a major challenge, but with this enrollment, we can now receive quality treatment without financial worries.”one of the beneficiaries said.

The ceremony was attended by the Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Ben Obidike; the traditional ruler of Nanka, Igwe Godwin Ezeilo; and other prominent community leaders.
