The Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Charles Soludo, has announced a policy capping the maximum fine for any traffic offence in the state at ₦10,000, regardless of the nature of the violation.
This announcement followed complaints from drivers across the state alleging harassment and extortion by officials of the Anambra Road Traffic Management Agency (ARTMA).
The development came shortly after the drivers endorsed Governor Soludo’s bid for re-election during an event in Onitsha on Monday.
Speaking at a mega rally-turned-town hall meeting at Chuba Ikpeazu Stadium, Onitsha, organized by transport stakeholders in support of his second-term ambition, Governor Soludo stated:”The maximum fine payable for any traffic offense in the state will be capped at ₦10,000, regardless of the nature of the offence.”
He said that the policy is aimed at easing the financial burden on motorists and will take effect from Tuesday, October 14, 2025.
In a statement issued by his Press Secretary, Governor Soludo reiterated that the decision forms part of his administration’s broader commitment to inclusive and equitable governance that reflects the economic realities of everyday citizens.
“The policy is designed to alleviate the economic strain on our people, particularly at a time when many are grappling with rising costs,” Soludo told the crowd of transport operators, union members, and community leaders.
Highlighting his administration’s support for road users and transport operators, Soludo noted the importance of balancing law enforcement with empathy.
“We are partners in progress. We will establish a special task force to enforce action against illegal tax collectors. Anyone who collects cash must remit it to government coffers,” he stated.
He also promised that ARTMA would ensure proper designation and marking of bus stops across the state to improve traffic management.
Commending the drivers, Soludo described drivers as pivotal to the state’s economy:
“While you contribute immensely to the economy, you are also among the greatest beneficiaries of this administration. Based on available records, the kilometers of roads we have constructed and rehabilitated in less than four years are unmatched. This progress is for you,” he said, assuring that the development under his government is only just beginning.
Also speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Transport, Barr. Patricia Igwebuike, praised Governor Soludo for his alignment with multiple sectors, including maritime, aviation, road transportation, and the blue economy.
