INEC Holds the Key to YPP’s Faith in a Free, Fair November 8 Election
By Ebuka Onyekwelu, PhD
The Young Progressives Party (YPP) remains firmly committed to ensuring a peaceful, free, and fair electoral process in Anambra State on November 8. As a progressive political party, we have conducted our campaign with civility, decorum, and an unwavering focus on governance issues.
We did not enter this contest to be distracted by trivial or sensational discussions that do nothing to improve the lives of Ndi Anambra. Our concerns are clear and grounded in facts.
First, Governor Charles Soludo has failed to justify the enormous revenues managed under his administration for more than three years. The scale of government spending does not reflect in the quality of life or infrastructure across the state.
Second, insecurity has persisted under his watch. For years, the state suffered needless loss of lives and property, yet decisive action came only this election year. Operation Udo Ga Chi, launched recently, is a belated response to a crisis that could have been addressed much earlier.
Financially, the mismatch between revenue and results is glaring. Between January and June this year alone, Anambra State received over ₦150 billion in FAAC allocations and more than ₦60 billion in local government funds. Yet, there is little or no visible impact of these funds at the grassroots level.
In response to this failure, the YPP has presented Ndi Anambra with a credible alternative , our candidate, Sir Paul Chukwuma, whose HIS Agenda (Human Capital Development, Infrastructure Development, and Security) offers a realistic pathway to good governance and progress. Together with his running mate, Uzu Okagbue, he carries a clear message: Anambra Deserves Better.
The people of Anambra understand this message and are responding positively. Across the state, voters are mobilising, collecting their PVCs, and preparing to make their voices heard at the ballot box. We urge them to stay committed, as their votes will deliver a decisive verdict on this administration in just two weeks.
However, beyond our readiness to ensure a peaceful and credible election, we make the following demands,Disbandment of Armed Militias: The state government–sponsored armed groups bearing prohibited firearms must be completely excluded from the electoral process,INEC’s Oversight on Government Conduct: INEC must not turn a blind eye while the Anambra State Government acts as though it is above the law. The Commission should investigate government expenditures and sanction any breaches of the Electoral Act, especially overspending and Action on Vote Buying: INEC must take a firm position on the disturbing trend of vote buying, which the current administration reportedly elevated during the last by-election. Is vote buying now to be tolerated as part of our electoral process?
We, therefore, call on INEC to demonstrate an unimpeachable commitment to its own rules and standards. Such integrity from the Commission will naturally inspire all stakeholders to act responsibly, ensuring a genuinely free, fair, and credible election on November 8.
