Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has approved scholarships for 140 newly admitted students of the Ebonyi State University of ICT, located at Oferekpe Agbaja in Izzi Local Government Area.

The approval was one of the major resolutions reached during the State Executive Council meeting held on Wednesday.

This development was disclosed to journalists on Thursday by the Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Barr. Ikeuwa Omebeh.

According to Omebeh, the initiative reflects Governor Nwifuru’s commitment to building a technologically driven workforce capable of positioning the state for competitiveness in the digital age. He explained that the beneficiaries were drawn from all 13 local government areas of the state.

He further stated that the scholarship programme was designed to ensure equitable representation across the state, including the host community.

“Council reviewed the level of compliance from each of the benefiting local government areas and directed the Ministry of Tertiary Education to expedite action to ensure that all targeted councils are equally accommodated within the specified period,” Omebeh said.

The commissioner described the initiative as part of the Governor’s broader People’s Charter of Needs Agenda, which prioritizes education, youth empowerment, and innovation as key pillars for sustainable development.

Omebeh added that the university was established to equip students with cutting-edge skills in software engineering, data science, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and other emerging fields critical to both the state’s and the nation’s digital transformation.

He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to expanding access to quality education, particularly in sectors that drive economic growth and job creation.

“The scholarship will not only relieve parents of financial burdens but also prepare our young people to seize global digital opportunities,” he noted.

The Council also deliberated on other educational projects, including the remodelling of the State Library Complex. The architectural design for the project was presented, and the Council directed that a Bill of Engineering Measurement and Evaluation (BEME) be submitted at its next meeting for approval.
