Processed Foods Major Contributors to Diabetes in Nigeria — Anambra First Lady
First Lady of Anambra State, Dr. Nonye Soludo
The First Lady of Anambra State, Dr. Nonye Soludo, has warned that Nigerians’ growing preference for junk and highly processed foods is a major factor driving the alarming rise in diabetes cases across the country.
Dr. Soludo made this known in a statement issued on Friday to commemorate World Diabetes Day, observed globally every year on November 14. The 2025 edition is themed “Diabetes Across Life Stages.”
According to her, diabetes has increasingly found its way into many households largely because people continue to choose unhealthy, processed meals over natural, wholesome food options readily available in their communities.
Dr. Soludo, who is also the founder of the Healthy Living Initiative, stressed that Nigerians must urgently rethink their dietary habits if the country is to effectively confront the escalating burden of diabetes.
She urged citizens to embrace healthier living as a fundamental step toward reducing the prevalence of the disease, explaining that while routine medical check-ups are crucial for early detection and proper management, lifestyle modification remains the first and most important line of defence.
“Lifestyle choices can kill or save. A large chunk of what we consume today is slowly destroying our health,”
“We must pay closer attention to what goes into our bodies, food, drinks, or anything else. This is where healthy living plays its biggest role.”she said.
Dr. Soludo noted that diabetes remains a significant public health concern in Nigeria, with official reports estimating that over three million Nigerians are currently living with the condition.
She added, that the true figure is likely much higher because many cases remain undiagnosed.
She emphasised that addressing the diabetes epidemic requires collective effort:
“Tackling diabetes in our communities is a task that demands both hands. Families, governments, and health stakeholders must intensify awareness and promote healthier habits.”dhe added.
The governor’s wife reaffirmed her commitment, through the Healthy Living Initiative to continue championing good nutrition, regular physical activity, and disciplined lifestyle choices as sustainable pathways to reducing the diabetes burden across all age groups.
