A devastating tragedy struck on Wednesday when a bus filled with passengers mainly young graduates travelling for their mandatory national service was involved in a fatal accident on its way to orientation camp.
The 18-seater bus, carrying bright-eyed university graduates of Adeyemi Federal University of Education (AFUED), Ondo State heading to their National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp, became the scene of unspeakable carnage after a horrific road crash. Out of the 18 occupants, 16 were killed.
Sixteen young Nigerians, full of hopes and dreams, lost their lives in the devastating accident involving the bus traveling from Ondo State to Gombe State.
According to eyewitness accounts, only two passengers survived, and they are currently fighting for their lives.
Eyewitnesses described the accident as catastrophic, saying it reduced the vehicle to a twisted heap of metal and silence.
The victims were all Prospective Corps Members (PCMs) from AFUED, Ondo, journeying to the NYSC orientation camp for their mandatory year of national service.
The incident has been widely described as a “Black Wednesday”, with heartbroken commentators struggling to process the scale of the tragedy.
A distraught source speaking about the incident said his heart was “heavy,” calling it “an indescribable loss for their families, their institution, and our nation.”
He added:“An 18-seater bus full of bright young Nigerians with hopes and dreams was reduced to silence in a moment as nearly everyone on board succumbed instantly to the cold hands of death.”
The shocking incident has again ignited public outrage over the relentless and avoidable loss of lives on Nigeria’s notoriously dangerous highways.
There are mounting calls for immediate and decisive government intervention to halt the “unbearable” wave of road tragedies.
“This wave of needless tragedy is becoming unbearable,” “It is high time the Federal Government intervened decisively to stem the relentless loss of innocent lives on our roads.”the source stressed.
Families of the young graduates are now mourning futures stolen in an instant, while the nation waits anxiously for updates on the two critically injured survivors.
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is a compulsory year-long program for Nigerian university and polytechnic graduates, aimed at promoting national unity and integration. Graduates are required to report to designated orientation camps—often far from their home states—to begin the service year.
Nigeria continues to battle a severe road safety crisis, with accidents frequently caused by poorly maintained vehicles, excessive speeding, weak regulatory enforcement, and dilapidated road infrastructure. Long-distance inter-state bus travel, though common, remains highly hazardous, and accidents involving students or large groups often trigger nationwide outrage and renewed calls for reform.
