Otti Expresses Satisfaction with Completion of NYSC Camp Upgrade in Abia
Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has expressed satisfaction with the completion of the rehabilitation of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) permanent orientation camp located in Umunna, Bende Local Government Area of the state.
The governor spoke on Friday during the opening ceremony of the 2026 Batch ‘A’ Stream 1 NYSC orientation programme for corps members deployed to Abia State, where he commended the quality of work carried out at the camp.
Governor Otti assured that the second phase of the rehabilitation project would soon be completed.
He said the next phase would cover the construction and rehabilitation of internal roads, perimeter fencing, pavilion structures, and the parade ground.
According to him, the retrofitting of the camp and the provision of basic infrastructure were among the earliest commitments of his administration upon assuming office.
“I am impressed with the work done so far to make this place more befitting for the camping of corps members,” “However, there are still areas that require significant improvement, especially as the number of corps members posted to Abia State continues to increase.”the governor said.
Otti reiterated his administration’s commitment to creating a welcoming environment for corps members and attracting young talents capable of contributing meaningfully to the state’s development.
He pledged the state government’s continued support for the NYSC scheme, particularly in ensuring the welfare, safety, and overall well-being of corps members serving in Abia.
The governor also commended the Abia State NYSC leadership for what he described as their unyielding dedication to the welfare of corps members.
He encouraged the newly deployed corps members to take advantage of various human capital development programmes introduced by his administration, noting that such initiatives could enable them to lay the foundations of globally competitive enterprises while serving in the state.
According to him, the programmes focus on developing skills in information and communication technology (ICT), entrepreneurship, and agriculture, targeting young people with diverse interests and ambitions.
Earlier in her remarks, the Abia State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs Gladys Adama, expressed appreciation to Governor Otti for his unwavering support for the NYSC scheme in the state.
She appealed to the governor to intervene in order to hasten the commencement and completion of the second phase of the camp’s rehabilitation project.
Adama also called for the expedited relocation of the NYSC State Secretariat located on Finbarrs’ Road, Aba, describing the facility as uninhabitable.
The state coordinator further disclosed that the orientation camp currently relies on generators for electricity due to the absence of power supply from the national grid.
In addition, she appealed to the state government to provide a coaster bus, a utility vehicle, and an ambulance to improve operational efficiency and emergency response at the camp.
A total of 1,820 corps members took the oath of allegiance during the ceremony. The oath was administered by the Chief Judge of Abia State, Justice Lilian Abai, who was represented by Justice E.C. Anyim.
