Accident scene
It was a tragic Friday evening as four persons lost their lives and nine others sustained injuries in a fatal road accident at Agulu Lake Bridge along the Agulu–Nanka Road in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The four deceased victims, all women, were confirmed dead at the scene. The nine injured persons comprised four female adults, two male adults, and three male children. They sustained varying degrees of injuries in the crash.
The multiple accident, which occurred at about 6:18 p.m. on Friday, involved four vehicles. Immediately after the incident, the drivers reportedly fled to unknown destinations.
According to the Sector Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), SRC Margaret B. Onebe, who confirmed the incident in a statement, the crash was caused by excessive speeding.
She explained that the vehicles lost control and veered into the bush near the lake.
The statement noted that there were no eyewitnesses to clearly describe how the accident occurred, as all four drivers fled the scene.
The statement reads:
“The crash involved four vehicles: Vehicle 1: Toyota Hiace, Registration Number: HAL676YG
Vehicle 2: Trailer, Registration Number: N/A
Vehicle 3: Shuttle, Registration Number: UKP274YA
Vehicle 4: Toyota Hilux, Registration Number: N/A
“The probable cause of the crash was speeding and loss of control. There were no eyewitnesses, as all the drivers fled the scene. However, observations by the FRSC rescue team from the Nanka Outpost indicated that one of the vehicles was descending the hill at high speed, lost control, and collided with three other vehicles.
“A total of 19 persons were involved in the crash, comprising six male adults, 10 female adults, and three male children. Nine persons — two male adults, four female adults, and three male children — were injured, while four female adults lost their lives.
“The victims were taken to St. Joseph Hospital, Adazi, for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited in the hospital morgue. An alternative route was created to ease traffic flow.”
The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno, commiserated with the families of the deceased and wished the injured a swift recovery. She urged motorists to prioritise safety and drive cautiously to prevent avoidable crashes.
