The Chairman and CEO of Seahorse Lubricants Ltd., Chief Dr. Ebuka Onunkwo, has formally declared his intention to contest for the Anambra South Senatorial seat.
He stated that his decision to run is driven by a desire to provide quality and purposeful representation to the people of Anambra South, noting that the zone is currently lacking effective and impactful leadership at the National Assembly.
While making his declaration, Onunkwo emphasized that a seat in the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is not meant for “bench warmers” who have little or nothing to contribute to national development or to the progress of their senatorial districts.
Onunkwo, who disclosed his intention to contest in the 2027 National Assembly elections in Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area, under the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), stressed that any representative who remains silent and inactive on issues affecting the welfare of their constituents has no business occupying a seat in the Senate.
He expressed deep concern over the level of hopelessness and deprivation across the seven local government areas of Anambra South, observing that the district has suffered from a lack of effective, responsive, and standard representation.
“I have toured the seven local government areas of Anambra South, and I have come to the clear realization that our people are not receiving the representation they deserve. This is why I have deemed it necessary to present myself—to offer standard, responsive, and quality representation,” he said.
He further stressed that his ambition is not driven by personal gain or status, but by a commitment to service.
“I am not going there to warm a seat. I am going there to attract and facilitate the dividends of democracy to Anambra South, and to ensure that these benefits are effectively delivered and utilized for the advancement of my senatorial district,” he added.
Describing his political philosophy, Onunkwo noted that his approach is people-centered and driven by genuine public need, rather than political convenience or opportunism.
“My brand of politics is public-driven. I am not a conventional politician. There are things I do that are quite different from what typical politicians do,” he said.
He illustrated this with a personal example:
“I once visited a small church with a modest congregation and made a significant donation—not because of the size of the congregation, but because of the magnitude of their needs. A typical politician might focus only on large crowds for visibility and votes, but my approach is guided by need, not numbers.”
He reiterated that his actions are motivated by a sincere commitment to improving lives.
“My politics is driven by the needs of the people, and that is what informs my generosity and interventions,” he said.
Expressing confidence in his candidacy, Onunkwo added:
“Based on what you have witnessed here today—the level of support and the turnout of my supporters—I am optimistic about securing the party’s nomination. However, I ultimately leave everything in the hands of God.”
Speaking earlier, the Majority Leader of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Chief Ikenna Ofodeme, and the Chairman of APGA in Ekwusigo Local Government Area, Chief Edwin Ukorah, described Onunkwo’s ambition as timely, reassuring, and a source of hope for the people of the zone.
They noted that his emergence would bring significant multiplier effects in terms of socio-economic development, adding that his leadership has the potential to reposition Anambra South for sustainable growth and improved welfare.
