NYSC Marks 53rd Anniversary in Abia, Hails Corps Members for Impact on National Growth

The Abia State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Alhaji Yunusa Tanimu, has reaffirmed that the scheme remains one of Nigeria’s most enduring and impactful nation-building institutions.
Tanimu made the assertion on Friday during activities marking the 53rd anniversary of the NYSC at the NYSC Abia State Secretariat in Umuahia.
According to him, the scheme, which was established in 1973 in the aftermath of the Nigerian Civil War, was primarily created to promote national unity, foster mutual understanding, and encourage peaceful coexistence among Nigerian youths from diverse ethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds.
“Fifty-three years later, it is gratifying to note that the NYSC has continued to play this vital role with remarkable impact across the country,” he said.
The coordinator noted that over the decades, millions of corps members had contributed significantly to community and national development in various sectors, including education, healthcare delivery, agriculture, rural infrastructure development, voter education, environmental sanitation, entrepreneurship, and youth empowerment initiatives.
“Through the scheme, young graduates have not only rendered service to the nation but have also acquired valuable experiences, built lifelong relationships across ethnic and religious divides, and contributed meaningfully to national progress and social cohesion,” he added.
Tanimu stated that Abia State remained proud of the positive impact corps members had continued to make in its socio-economic development, describing their dedication, creativity, patriotism, and resilience as sources of hope for a stronger and more united Nigeria.
He further reaffirmed the commitment of the NYSC Abia Secretariat to the vision and ideals of the scheme’s founding fathers, pledging continued dedication to the core values of discipline, patriotism, integrity, selfless service, leadership, and national unity.
“We shall continue to guide, mentor, and support corps members toward the successful achievement of the NYSC mandate,” .
“We are also resolved to ensure that the scheme remains relevant, dynamic, and responsive to the changing needs and aspirations of our nation.”he said.
The state coordinator also commended stakeholders in Abia State for their sustained support and cooperation with the scheme over the years.
He specifically appreciated the state government, security agencies, employers of labour, traditional rulers, community leaders, and partner organisations for creating an enabling environment for corps members to serve effectively.
Addressing corps members directly, Tanimu urged them to remain committed to national service and to uphold the values of responsibility, discipline, and patriotism throughout their service year.
“I urge you to remain committed to the service of our fatherland,”
“Continue to conduct yourselves responsibly and contribute positively wherever you are posted. Your service to the nation today is an investment in the Nigeria of tomorrow.”he said.
He also called on Nigerians to renew their commitment to national unity, peaceful coexistence, tolerance, and selfless service as the scheme celebrates another milestone in its history.
The anniversary celebration featured the cutting of the commemorative cake, a rally around the secretariat complex, and colourful cultural dance performances by the Abia cultural troupe.
The event also showcased presentations by corps members, who narrated the history and achievements of the NYSC scheme in different Nigerian languages, highlighting the country’s rich cultural diversity and the unifying role of the programme.
