Otti Partners China Harbour to Position Abia as South-East Maritime Gateway
The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, has commenced the process for a feasibility study on the proposed Abia State Seaport at Obeaku in partnership with China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC).
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Executive Governor of Abia State, Ctz. Ukoha Njoku Ukoha.
The Azumini Seaport Project is designed to position Abia State as a gateway economy in the South-East by providing direct maritime access to Aba’s industrial cluster and the wider region.
According to the statement, if completed, the seaport would significantly reduce cargo transportation costs for manufacturers, ease congestion at the Lagos ports, and create a new logistics corridor linking Abia to global trade routes through the Imo/Azumini Blue River.
The statement further noted that the feasibility study will assess the project’s technical, economic, environmental, and social viability.
It will also examine critical components such as dredging requirements, port design specifications, road and rail connectivity, and private-sector financing models.
“For Abia, this is strategic infrastructure. It aligns with Governor Otti’s ‘Rebuild Abia’ agenda by driving job creation, enhancing export competitiveness, and generating long-term revenue for the state.
“For Nigeria, the Obeaku Port would provide a third functional port corridor alongside Onne Port and the Ibom Deep Sea Port, strengthening the nation’s maritime and logistics capacity.
“The next steps following the feasibility study will determine the project’s implementation timeline, investment structure, and the necessary federal approvals,” the statement said.
