The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has advocated greater parental guidance following the suspected suicide of a 25-year-old female student in Onitsha.
The Commissioner of Police also expressed deep concern over the increasing level of moral decadence and other disturbing incidents being recorded in society.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Command, Awka, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, CP Orutugu described the trend as alarming and a collective challenge that requires urgent attention from families, communities, religious institutions, and other relevant stakeholders.
The CP made these remarks while reacting to the recent death of a 25-year-old female student who was found on June 18, 2026, in circumstances suggesting a case of suspected suicide in Onitsha.
According to the statement, a note believed to be a suicide message was recovered at the scene. The note reportedly contained a disturbing account of a relationship breakup after the deceased allegedly underwent three abortions for an unidentified man named Chigozie.
He noted that while investigations are ongoing to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding the incident, the unfortunate development highlights the urgent need for stronger parental guidance, sound moral upbringing, and effective emotional support systems for young people.
CP Orutugu emphasized that parents and guardians must play a more active role in the lives of their children and wards by paying closer attention to their emotional well-being, social interactions, and behavioural changes.
He stressed that many societal challenges could be mitigated through effective parenting, open communication, and the inculcation of sound moral values.
The Commissioner further urged community leaders, educational institutions, faith-based organisations, and civil society groups to intensify advocacy, counselling, and mentorship programmes aimed at promoting positive values, resilience, emotional stability, and responsible living among youths.
Furthermore, CP Orutugu directed the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for a thorough, discreet, and professional investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Anambra State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property while collaborating with relevant stakeholders to address emerging social concerns that threaten public safety, social stability, and the overall well-being of society.
