The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has urged officers to intensify surveillance operations to prevent any unlawful gatherings or attempts to enforce the sit-at-home directive by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the state on Friday.
This directive followed the arrest of one Friday Obeta, who is suspected to be a member and informant of IPOB in Nnewi.
According to the police, a motorcycle, a branded t-shirt, and an operational identification card of the proscribed organization were recovered from the suspect.
Obeta reportedly confessed to being a member and informant of the group.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Nnewi Sector, arrested the suspect based on credible intelligence.
He disclosed that Obeta, aged 37, was apprehended while finalizing plans to enforce the sit-at-home order scheduled for May 30, 2025.
SP Ikenga reiterated that the suspect had made useful statements that are aiding ongoing investigations, with the aim of apprehending other members of the group.
He further noted that Commissioner Orutugu has instructed police operatives to intensify their operations in light of the suspect’s confession and urged them to remain vigilant in preventing any unlawful activities across the state.
