Plastic Waste: The Most Critical Challenge of Our Time – Ude Akpeh

Dr. Emman Ude Akpeh, Chairman of the Nigerian Environmental Society (NES), Anambra State chapter

Dr. Emman Ude Akpeh, Chairman of the Nigerian Environmental Society (NES), Anambra State chapter, has identified plastic waste as one of the most urgent and critical challenges of our time, demanding immediate action.

In his June monthly message, Dr. Ude Akpeh called on Nigerians to unite in combating this environmental threat.

“As we enter June, a month dedicated to global environmental action, I am reminded of the power of collective effort,”

“In Anambra State and throughout Nigeria, the evidence is clear: clogged drainages, polluted waterways, and ecosystems struggling under the burden of our plastic dependency. This World Environment Day (June 5th), themed ‘Beat Plastic Pollution,’ urges us to confront this pressing challenge head-on.”he said.

The NES Chairman emphasized that both the willingness and capacity to act are essential in tackling the plastic waste crisis. “This month, let us transform awareness into action. Here’s how you can lead the charge:Advocate for change by engaging policymakers and businesses to implement and enforce regulations on single-use plastics while promoting sustainable packaging alternatives.Mobilize communities by organizing clean-ups, plastic-free market initiatives, and school programs aimed at reducing waste and fostering eco-conscious habits.Champion reuse and recycling by supporting local recycling efforts, waste segregation campaigns, and innovations that repurpose plastic waste.Educate and inspire using every available platform—social media, radio, town halls—to highlight the dangers of plastic pollution and showcase viable solutions.”

He further highlighted recent progress in alternatives to plastic: “Reusable bags, bamboo straws, refill stations, and community-led zero-waste projects demonstrate that sustainable options do exist. Every small step—a bottle refused, a properly sorted bin—adds up to monumental change.”

“As we observe World Environment Day, I urge everyone to lead by example. Share your actions online with #BeatPlasticPollution and #NESAnambra. Together, we can reshape Anambra’s future into one free from plastic pollution. Here’s to a month of impactful strides for our planet,” Dr. Ude Akpeh added.
