June 12: Symbol of Nigeria’s Enduring Democracy – Anambra Deputy Speaker

The Deputy Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Chief Chukwuma Okoye, has described June 12 as a day that symbolizes the enduring strength and resilience of democracy in Nigeria.

He made this statement in Awka  on Tuesday while reflecting on the performance of the 8th Anambra State House of Assembly.

According to Chief Okoye, the past year has been marked by dedication, learning, and significant legislative progress. He noted that the 8th Assembly has shown exceptional unity, discipline, and commitment to the democratic mandate entrusted to it by the people of Anambra State.

Chief Okoye said  that the current legislature has enacted laws and passed motions that directly impact critical sectors such as education, infrastructure, health, security, and youth empowerment. 

He added that the Assembly has maintained robust oversight of the executive branch to ensure that government policies remain people-oriented and effective.

Expressing pride in the level of cooperation and maturity among the lawmakers, Chief Okoye stated that the Assembly has elevated the legislative process beyond partisanship and personal interest, consistently prioritizing the welfare of the people.

Representing Awka South Constituency 2, the Deputy Speaker looked ahead with optimism, stating that the remaining two years of the Assembly’s tenure present an opportunity to consolidate on past achievements and expand their legislative impact.

“We intend to strengthen our legislative footprint through bills that promote innovation, the digital economy, and inclusive governance. Our commitment to transparency, accountability, and stakeholder engagement remains unwavering. I will continue to work closely with the Rt. Hon. Speaker and all members to deepen the integrity and productivity of our Assembly,” he said.

Chief Okoye reiterated that while the challenges ahead are numerous, the Assembly’s resolve is even stronger. 

He noted  that true democracy is not merely defined by elections, but by sustained service, ongoing dialogue, and effective delivery.

He reaffirmed the Assembly’s dedication to providing responsive leadership, stating that the people of Anambra deserve nothing less.

“We will continue to listen, to act, and to legislate in the best interests of all. The 8th Assembly is not just a legislative body—it is a vehicle for progress and a voice for the voiceless. I remain deeply humbled by the opportunity to serve and to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our people. We are just getting started, and with God and the people on our side, we will leave a legacy of impact and purpose,” Chief Okoye added.
