The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has embarked on a comprehensive statewide tour of police formations in a bid to strengthen security operations and reinforce community policing.

The inspection tour began on Tuesday with an unannounced visit to the Rapid Response Squad formation. From there, CP Orutugu proceeded to the Police Mobile Force (PMF) Squadron 54 and the Area Command in Onitsha.

In a statement released on Thursday by the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the CP’s visits are aimed at evaluating operational effectiveness, identifying security gaps, and reinforcing professionalism within the force.

During his interactions with officers, CP Orutugu emphasized the importance of integrity, discipline, and strict adherence to operational protocols.

He urged personnel to uphold the highest standards of conduct, especially in their engagement with the public and in managing internal responsibilities.

The Commissioner also expressed sorrow over the recent tragic incident in Awka, where a police inspector was accidentally shot and killed by his own son.

According to police reports, the son,unaware of the condition of the AK-47 rifle assigned to his father accidentally discharged the weapon, leading to the inspector’s death.

The officer’s second son, who sustained injuries during the incident, is currently receiving treatment in the hospital.

Describing the incident as deeply unfortunate, CP Orutugu underscored the need for officers to handle and store police equipment,especially firearms with utmost care and responsibility, even within their homes.

The police chief also used the visit to address broader welfare issues, urging officers to shun corruption, extortion, and negligence of family responsibilities factors he noted could significantly impact morale and operational performance.

Accompanying the Commissioner on the tour were the Assistant Commissioners of Police in charge of Administration and Criminal Investigations, along with other senior officers of the command.

CP Orutugu’s tour is expected to extend to all police formations across the state, including remote outposts, as part of broader efforts to boost public confidence in law enforcement and ensure a safer Anambra.
