Aba Power, Nigeria’s 12th electricity distribution company (DisCo), has credited the success of its ongoing free mass metering campaign to the active cooperation of its customers.
Speaking with journalists on Tuesday, Aba Power Managing Director Ugo Opiegbe stated:
“Without the enthusiastic cooperation of our numerous customers, we would not have achieved the overwhelming success that has seen us provide more free smart meters than any DisCo in Nigeria’s history since the resumption of the national metering rollout a month ago.”
Opiegbe noted that customers have been proactively preparing their premises by separating wiring for individual units in advance of the prepaid meter installation teams’ arrival, as the company has repeatedly advised.
“Once a qualified electrician separates the wires in buildings with multiple customers,” “we install the required number of meters at no cost.” he said.
The installations are proceeding feeder by feeder. Seven out of the 30 feeders in the Aba Ring-Fenced Area have already been covered. The current focus is on the Barracks and Abayi feeders, which include major roads such as the well-known Azikiwe and Milverton Roads.
Aba Power, in collaboration with four indigenous and foreign partners, is delivering 20,000 meters monthly free of charge.
“We are firmly on track to meter 100,000 customers this year,” Opiegbe declared.
Although there are officially 200,000 registered electricity customers in the Aba Ring-Fenced Area, which covers nine of Abia State’s 17 local government areas. Aba Power is planning to provide meters to more than this number, at an estimated cost of over ₦33 billion.
“While 200,000 customers are currently in our database,” “the actual number is likely much higher. Many buildings with multiple flats sometimes as many as eight are served by a single meter, meaning all occupants are counted as one customer.”Opiegbe explained.
He added, “We are now installing separate meters for each flat. This not only promotes billing transparency and simplifies payment but also reduces disputes arising from some residents refusing to pay equally, especially when they believe others are consuming more electricity.”
