Aba Union,Senator Abaribe Laud Otti for Transforming Abia, Pledge Support for 2027
Governor of Abia State Dr Alex Otti
The Aba Union, comprising the nine Local Government Areas of the defunct Aba Division, has thrown its full support behind the administration of Governor Alex Otti, commending him for what it described as an unprecedented transformation of Abia State.
Although the group did not back Otti during the 2023 elections, its leaders declared that the governor has, within two years in office, outperformed his predecessors of the past 24 years, thereby earning their endorsement ahead of the 2027 governorship race.
This declaration of support was made during a strategic meeting between Governor Otti and top members of the Union.
During the meeting, the Union highlighted several landmark projects that the Otti administration has initiated or completed in the region. These include the reconstruction of the formerly impassable Port Harcourt Road in Aba, the ongoing construction of the Abia International Airport in Nsulu, the Abia Medical Village in Owerrinta, and the Abia Integrated Industrial Park (AIIP) in Owaza. The projects were cited as evidence of Otti’s commitment to economic revitalization and infrastructural development in the former Aba Division.
Notable figures at the meeting included the President of the Aba Union, Eze Love Wogu; Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Chief Emmanuel Emeruwa; the state’s first Attorney General, Chief Sam Nkire, who hosted the gathering; and Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, representing Abia South in the National Assembly.
Speaking at the event, Senator Abaribe lauded Governor Otti’s achievements, describing them as transformative and commendable. He urged the governor to select a date for a public ceremony during which he would be formally endorsed as the Union’s sole candidate for the 2027 governorship election. Abaribe added that the endorsement reflects a united resolve to support continuity and progress in governance.
In his response, Governor Otti expressed gratitude for the endorsement and pledged to sustain the tempo of development across the state. He announced that reconstruction work on the long-neglected Uratta and Old Express Roads in Aba South would commence shortly, in line with his administration’s broader urban renewal agenda.
Governor Otti also promised to reconstruct the residence of the late Senator Jaja Wachuku, Nigeria’s first Foreign Affairs Minister, ahead of his posthumous birthday anniversary in January. He emphasized that preserving the legacy of Abia’s founding statesmen is a priority for his administration.
The Aba Union’s endorsement is widely seen as a significant political development, especially considering its historical influence in Abia politics. Analysts view the support as a strong signal of Otti’s growing popularity and a potential consolidation of power ahead of the 2027 elections.
