Ahead of the Anambra governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2025, the Labour Party (LP) and its candidate, George Moghalu, have officially flagged off their campaign, with notable party leaders including the 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi; Senator representing Anambra Central, Victor Umeh; and Senator representing Anambra North, Tony Nwoye, leading the charge.

The campaign flag-off, held at the All Saints Cathedral Church field in Onitsha, witnessed a massive turnout. It was attended by members of the National and State Assemblies elected on the LP platform, including Prof. Oby Orogbu (Awka North/South), Uchenna Okonkwo (Idemili North/South), Emeka Iduu (Onitsha North/South), George Ozodinobi (Njikoka/Dunukofia), and Afam Ogene (Ogbaru), among others.
Thousands of LP supporters, local government and ward executives, as well as numerous support groups, also participated in the event.
Speaking at the rally, Peter Obi expressed appreciation to the people of Anambra for their overwhelming support for the Labour Party and its governorship candidate, George Moghalu.
He described their turnout as a strong indication of the state’s readiness for change.
Addressing recent rumors regarding his political affiliation, Obi clarified that while he is part of a coalition that has adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 general elections, he remains fully committed to the Labour Party until then.
“Although I’m part of the coalition, I remain a member of the Labour Party. That is why I am here to campaign for our candidate, George Moghalu,” “We are here to flag off a campaign for a man who represents the best chance for Anambra’s progress.” Obi stated.
Obi urged supporters to return to their communities and mobilize grassroots support for LP and Moghalu, describing the candidacy as a pivotal opportunity for the state.
“George Moghalu is the best thing that has happened to Anambra politics in recent times. He and his running mate form the ideal team to lead the state forward. They have the competence, experience, and vision to take Anambra to the promised land,” “When I was governor, they claimed my only achievement was building the Sabmiller Brewery. But today, that brewery is the largest employer of labor and highest taxpayer in the state.”he added.
Also speaking at the rally, Senator Tony Nwoye pledged his full support to Moghalu and promised to join him in campaign tours across all local government areas in the state.
On his part, Senator Victor Umeh described Moghalu as a man of integrity, incorruptible and sincere, stressing that he could not be influenced or bought.
“The Labour Party is fortunate to have a candidate and a running mate who are not only electable but are capable of delivering genuine democratic dividends,” “Mrs. Okaro, his running mate, is a seasoned technocrat who will bring critical governance experience to the table.”Umeh said.
He advised the LP candidate to avoid negative or bitter campaigning and instead focus on developmental issues that matter to the people of Anambra.
Speaking on behalf of Labour Party members in the House of Representatives, Hon. Uchenna Annie Okonkwo assured that LP lawmakers at both federal and state levels would work collectively to ensure Moghalu’s victory at the polls.
In his address, the LP governorship candidate, Chief Dr. George Moghalu, thanked Peter Obi, party leaders, lawmakers, and the teeming supporters who attended the rally.
He reiterated his commitment and that of his running mate, Mrs. Okaro to reposition Anambra and place the state on the path of sustainable growth and prosperity.
“We have presented ourselves to serve, and we trust in God’s will to prevail,” Moghalu said.
Earlier, the state chairman of the Labour Party, Hon. Ugochukwu Emeh, represented by the deputy chairman, Ven. Christian Ohajekwe, expressed confidence in the party’s chances.
“Our candidate is tested and trusted. He has the capacity to win this election and lead Anambra to a new dawn. What we need now is unity and collective support to make it happen,” he said.
